PRE – LESSON Teacher Activities:
· List Lesson Goals:
1. Lesson Goal 1: The student will be able to name 6 of 8 the planets in order from the sun
and why the furthest ones get less sunlight after learning a song about the planets.
· List Materials and Technology Resources needed for the Lesson:
● Art supplies
● Solar system notecards

A. STARTING THE LESSON
· Review previous (days) lesson/assess previous learning:
● N/A
· Describe -Setting the stage for learning:
● Students would start at their desks for warm-up activity. Students will work with their
desk clusters to complete the worksheets.
· Warm-up Activity:
1.The teacher will have all of the students go to the carpet.
● The teacher will ask the students what they know about space and the solar system.
● The teacher will tell the students that the class is starting a unit on the solar system and they will
learn all about the solar system. Teacher will call on students that have hands raised politely.
○ How many planets are in the solar system?
○ Can anyone name a planet?
○ Does anyone know the order the planets go in?
● The teacher will show a short video clip of the solar system.

B. Teaching THE LESSON
Lesson Activities:
1. The teacher will read a book aloud to the class. The students should be looking for something
that is new to them about the solar system. For questions after book, teacher will call on
students with hands raised.
1) Does anyone remember the order of the planets?
2) What was a rew fact to you?
3) Which planets do you think we could visit? Why?
2. Teacher will give brief description of terrestrial vs. gaseous planets. We could possibly visit
terrestrial because they have a solid surface, gaseous are made of gas so it would be impossible
to land there.
3. Teacher will go over planets in the order from the sun and write them on the board with student
input. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
4. Teacher will underline first 4 planets and label them terrestrial. Label last 4 as gaseous.
5. Teacher will tell students that they are going to learn song that will help them remember the
order of the planets and which ones are terrestrial and which ones are gaseous.
6. Teacher will pass out lyrics to students for the solar system song.
7. Teacher will sing song as students follow along, pointing to follow along if need be.
8. Teacher will have students go through it with the teacher.
9. Teacher will give students a few minutes to practice song quietly by themselves.
10. Teacher will have students practice singing the song together as a class.
11. Teacher will erase some of the planets previously written on the board and have students fill in
the blanks as they sing the song. The teacher will select a student to write on the board. (K,A,V,)
12. The teacher will pass out note cards with the planets written on them to students. The students
without notecards will move the students to order the students with notecards in order from
the sun.
C. LESSON CLOSURE
● The teacher will have students think about which planet will get the most light and which will
get the least.
● Students will talk to their desk clusters about why they think they are correct.
● Teacher will debrief with students.
Lesson Assessments:
● The teacher would check for basic understanding of the concepts, as this lesson is meant to be
the the start of a unit.
● Teacher will assess students listening skills from the book, song, and peer interactions.
Lesson Extension/Homework:
● This lessons would be done at the start of a unit on the solar system.
