THE TRUMPET CALL
Our Mission: To love Jesus Christ and to share His Love
Our Vision: To be a Christian community where Christ is transforming lives
East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume IV Issue 44 November 4, 2018
Pastor’s Corner
I’m writing this the morning of All Saints Day, November 1, and we will
remember the saints this Sunday, as we always do, on the first Sunday
of November. We have many saints to memorialize this year; nineteen
to be exact. These are all the people from our congregation, both
members and non-members, who have passed away since our last All
Saints Sunday in November 2017. If you would like to lift up someone whose name is
not mentioned on Sunday at both services, there will be space for you to do that. It is
important that in these brief moments of worship we remember the character and the
contributions of each of these persons in the life and ministry of our church. Our
church would not be the body of believers it is today without the gifts they have
brought us, and we are deeply grateful.
There will be two other opportunities in December to remember loved ones. On Monday afternoon, December
17, from 4:00-4:30 pm, I will lead a service for those who attend our Community Meal. This will be a Service of
Remembrance for those who attended the meal faithfully and passed away during the year. It will also be a way
for those who attend to lift up their loved ones who have passed away in 2018. Later that same week on Friday,
December 21, there will be a community-wide Longest Night/Blue Christmas Service held at St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Stroudsburg, led by Gary Raish and Bob Riday, with input from area clergy. I will be a part
of that service, and will pass on more information as it becomes available.
This Sunday, November 4, will feature the final message on the book, I Am a Church Member. Many of you
have been involved in Sunday morning studies as well as small group studies at other times and places during
the week. We sincerely hope and pray this has been a meaningful experience for all who have participated!
This study and series of sermons is an excellent lead-in to a season of stewardship, which brings me to the
following Sundays of November 11 and 18. Between services and after 10:45 worship on November 11, you
are invited to mingle with ministry leaders, find out more about ministries in which you want to become involved,
and sign up to help in those ministries during our informal Ministry Event.
On November 18, we will have one service only beginning at 10:00 am. This is Celebration Sunday, when
we will bring our commitments to worship and people will be invited to come forward to place their financial
commitments for 2019 in one basket and their commitments of time and talent in the other basket. We hope the
November 11 Ministry Event will help you to clarify the ways you want to become involved in the mission and
vision of the church in 2019. Following our one service, we will have a
celebration luncheon called “A Slice of Pie” in Fellowship Hall. We will
welcome new members and celebrate the many ways God has been
leading us in 2018 as we set our sights on 2019. We hope you will
stay and join your fellow members and friends at the luncheon! One
final word about November 18: instead of us having our own
Thanksgiving Service that night as we have done in the past, we will
be joining with other area congregations in an interfaith Thanksgiving
service at First Presbyterian Church in Stroudsburg (575 Main St.) at
7:00 pm. In light of the recent tragedy in Pittsburgh, I am glad that it is
an interfaith service whereby we can continue to show support to
Jewish people in our community.
Many Blessings in Christ, Pastor Jim
On November 15th, we’re excited to be hosting a free livestream of
Dave Ramsey’s Smart Money event here at ESUMC. Dave Ramsey
has spent over 25 years teaching his program Financial Peace
University, hosting the third largest talk radio show in the country,
and helping people find hope and change their family trees. Dave
Ramsey and Chris Hogan will take the stage on November 15 in San
Antonio, and we will stream the event live. The best part? It’s abso-
lutely free for you to attend! We’d love for you to join us at 7:45pm
in Fellowship Hall and learn the steps you and your family can take
to live like no one else.
