Mini blast furnaces (MBF), defined as furnaces ranging from 175 to 350 cubic meters of working volume,
have been developed by KTS (Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica), a Mannesmann Group company in Brazil.
They are characterized by their simplicity and high operational flexibility and, therefore low specific
investment and production cost. The operational results of MBF obtained by Mannesmann in Brazil,
using different blends of coke and charcoal and lump ore for producing basic pig iron, and the
performance of Kirloskars MBF, producing foundry grade iron with coke and local ore, demonstrate the
viability of low cost source of primary metal, even at a small scale plant.
