Student Work Log/Narrative
Week of 9/17/2018
Responsibilities:
I Formerly met with Dr. Malin, Dean Vinson and other inters. We introduced ourselves and went
over exactly what we will work on this fall semester. I began to work on and review
communications plan for the Chapel in order to familiarize other interns with the plan. In
addition, I created SMART Goals for the internship.

Comments/Reflections
I am excited to begin this internship. Although I am nervous, I feel prepared to begin
implementing the communications plan for Chapel. It was hard for me to create SMART goals
because I have a lot of areas I want to improve on, but don’t know how to put it into a SMART
goals format.
Week of 9/24/2018
Responsibilities
This week I was in charge of going over and editing the strategic communications plan for the
chapel that we will be using to improve Chapel attendance. I met with the other interns, reviewed
the strategic plan and took suggestions that would help improve the plan. I also looked over the
website and all social media handles related to chapel, reviewed them in detail in order to
eliminate unnecessary ones.

Comments/Reflections
This week was really laid back and hands off. Being in charge of implementing the strategic plan
is nerve-wracking and sometimes I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. This is my first time
having a public relations internship, so I think I need more guidance in order to actually learn
and take away key skills needed in the PR field.
Week of 10/01/2018
Responsibilities
This week I was in charge or curating social media posts for the social media calendar, speaking
with the staff and students in the Office of the Chapel and doing research on prominent figures
who participated in Chapel. I spoke with students and faculty on Monday and Wednesday to
gather information about prominent figures as well as completing hours of research online for
these facts. I also revised and edited the strategic plan with the other intern’s ideas.
Comments/Reflections
In the beginning, I was stressed out trying to find facts and information about prominent figures
that participated in Chapel. This information was not easy to come by because this history was
not written down. The only people that really know about prominent figures participating in
Chapel are the faculty and staff that have been working for the chapel for years. In the end, I was
able to find some information, but I will continue to do research.
Week of 10/08/2018
Responsibilities
This week I was tasked with editing a media advisory for a play that will be put on by the
Muslim Association of the Office of the Chapel and continue to research prominent figures for
the social media calendar. In addition, I made the last tweaks and revisions to the strategic plan.

Comments/Reflections
I am starting to feel better about the content I am producing and creating. As I looked over the
media advisory to edit and make changes, I decided to rewrite the whole thing because the
structure was not correct and neither was the content. I felt comfortable enough to rewrite and
produce my own because of the work I have done in Advanced PR writing. Research for the
social media calendar is slowly coming together, but it is still difficult to find these figures.
Week of 10/15/2018
Responsibilities
This week I met with Dr. Malin to go order expectations for the Chapel’s strategic plan. She is
planning a meeting for all faculty and staff of the Chapel in order to get everyone on the same
page. It is my responsibility to thoroughly explain the strategic plan to all members at the
meeting to ensure everyone knows exactly what Chapel hopes to accomplish moving forward.

Comments/Reflections
Chapel faculty and staff as a whole seem to be unorganized and not on the same page regarding
the communications part of the organization. The Chapel already has their own communications
team, I am under Dean Vinson as an intern, so sometimes I feel out of the loop when the
communications team already has work they produced or ideas to improve Chapel
communications that is different from the strategic plan I helped to come up with.
Week of 10/22/2018
Responsibilities
This is the week of homecoming so I am tasked with attending a Chapel mixer on Saturday
morning, creating a sign in sheet and getting contact information from alumni that have
previously been involved in the Chapel. I will take this information, do research on them (if they
are somewhat of a prominent figure) in order to curate more social media posts for the calendar.

Comments/Reflections
I feel like there is more I can be doing as a PR Intern. I honestly don’t feel like I am getting the
full experience I need in order to secure a decent PR job when I graduate. I have done more
assignments related to PR in classes such as Fundamentals of Public Relations and Advanced PR
Writing. I will plan on speaking with Dean Vinson to see if there is more I can do.
Week of 10/29/2018
Responsibilities
This is the week I am tasked with attending a Sunday Chapel service in order to begin to
implement the strategic plan. Also, I need to speak with Dean Richardson about activities and
events to produce in order to increased the surrounding neighborhood’s participation in Chapel.
_________________________________________________
Comments/Reflections
This week was very light in terms of work. It is mainly up to me to meet with Chapel staff in
order to actually get work done. These are not daunting tasks because I am familiar with Chapel
staff, but I wish there were more Chapel PR interns that an help me with this strategic plan
because it definitely takes more than one or two people to carry out a plan.
Week of 11/05/2018
Responsibilities
This is the week I am meeting with Dr. Malin to review the culminating communication project
for the semester which will consist of a comprehensive promotional kit to include a traditional
Press Kit and EPK for all Chapel Programs.
_________________________________________________
Comments/Reflections
I thought this internship would be a little more fast paced with lots of work to do since the
Chapel’s communication team now is unorganized and not on the same page interns of materials
they produced, but work is just now picking up as we are wrapping up the semester. I am not
sure of this press kit and other material we will have the meeting about will be ready by the end
of the semester. I do plan on continuing to work with the Chapel next semester to carry out the
full plan.
Week of 11/12/2018
Responsibilities
This week involves more research, speaking with faculty staff, attending meetings (if they
actually happen), revising and editing all my work as well as forming logistics of what next
semester will look like.
_________________________________________________
Comments/Reflections
As the internship is coming to an end for this semester, I am beginning to reflect on the progress
made this semester and the heavy work load for next semester in order to increase Chapel
engagement. I am beginning to realize that this semester was more of getting all of Chapel
faculty and staff on one accord, and hopefully next semester everyone will be ready to help
implement the strategic plan!
Week of 11/19/2018
Responsibilities
This is the week I am attending a criminal justice reform panel with the Chapel. I am a part of
the press team so I am allowed to take my phone in the Jail to take pictures of the students,
residents and panel. I will work with the other members of the press team to come up with social
media posts and take notes of key quotes from the panelists to use as captions.

Comments/Reflections
The panel was very interesting and gave me a new insight into the criminal injustice that goes on
behind the walls of the jails. I was more than excited to hear the inmates point of view in order to
take notes and write an article about the experience. I was able to take notes and get great quotes
from Dr. Muhammad, Nick Cannon and other panelist.
Week of 11/26/2018
Responsibilities
This is the last week of the internship, I am writing an article about the criminal justice reform
panel and curating captions/posts for the pictures taken at the panel. I will also speak to Dean
Vinson about doing more hands on work to complete the 2018/2019 Chapel strategic plan.

Comments/Reflections
I thought I would get more out of this internship than I did, as I have stated in the previous
weeks. Next semester I will still work with the Chapel since I came up with the strategic plan,
but I am thinking about looking for outside internships to help me develop my PR skills. Some
weeks were slower than others with this internship, which is expected, but I hope to work in a
fast pace environment one day, so I need to be prepared for that.
