Design analysis of the high rise and skyscraper
“The development in the concrete technology over the twentieth
century covering materials, structural system, analysis and construction
technique, made it possible to build concrete tall buildings such as
Petron’s towers (452m), Jin mao (421m), Willis tower (442.1m), and
Burj khalifa of Dubai (800m+)”
AIM OF OUR PROJECT….
Analysis and design of high rise RC /Steel residential buildings located in
seismic zone on hard soil .The framing system of the building is moment-
resisting frames with brick masonry infill panels.
Our project consists of analysis and designing of three following structure
RCC
Steel
Combination of STEEL & RCC
Introduction
• Scarcity of land
• Leaping demand for business and residential space
• Thriving economies and booming populations
• Broad casting and research facilities
• Advancements and innovations in structural systems
• Desire for aesthetics
• Tallness of building is more often relative
• Skyscrapers are in general a height greater than 150m
• ‘skyscraper’ was coined in 1880s
• Steel has made it all possible
• 1st ever tall building
• Home Insurance Building in Chicago
• Height - 42 m.
• Greater than 150 m as per CTBUH
• Super tall (>300 m)
• Mega tall (>600 m)
• Greater than 15 m as per NBC
• Greater than 21 m as per US General Laws
Software
• ETABS (Extended Three dimensional Analysis of Building Structures) –
Computers and Structure Inc.
• Revit Architecture -Autodesk
• AutoCAD –Autodesk
• Pile - Oasys
• MS Excel – Microsoft
LIMCON software by taking the straining actions/forces from the ETABS
model
Components of tall buildings
• Floor systems
• Gravity load resisting systems
• Lateral load resisting systems
• Connections
• Damping systems
Constructability
The time of designing the Skyscraper building the significance of
constructability has been reorganized. Construction constructability is one of
the prime factor to be considered during the design time to obtain the
buildable structural system and complete the projects on time and within the
budget, hence the construction complexities have been addressed such as
selection of materials properties, connection types, method of construction
sequence, loading conditions and combinations on the contract design
drawings and documents to facilitate the works during the construction phase
and avoid the dispute between the involved parties, variations, unwanted
debates and setback in the projects to meet the client interest and
expectations.
Wind induced vibrations
Wind on the tall buildings is one of the main loading factor which govern its
design .it induce vibrations of the buildings and applies bending, shear and
torsion on the different structural components of the buildings. The vibrations
of the tall buildings when expose to wind is studied in this section with
respect to following three issues
Drift of the building under wind load
Period of vibrations of the building &
Acceleration of vibration s of the building
Scope and Limitations
The main scope of this paper is to describe the design considerations,
challenges and constructability issues by taking the case study of 150 stories
tall sky scraper model in ETABS-2013 to address the drift, shear wall thick,
grade of materials and construction challenges from the constructability
perspectives. To have an optimum focus on the selected aim and reduce the
workload and have some limitation been made not to include the following
• Foundation
• Façade
• Concrete hydration and Elastic modules
• Detailed Connections
• Equipment Erection
Design Challenges
These would start in first place due to the client needs and interest on the
architectural vision and unique in shape to represent the culture, economy,
country and its states status. Where to obtain balancing the structural needs
versus project demands is always a challenge especially for the tall buildings
Further designing the structure by maintaining the selected Architectural
intent in addition to bear the design gravity and lateral loads by selecting the
construct able structural system’s, materials, methods would be a greatest
challenge to complete the project to suite the client needs with in the
scheduled time and budget.
