NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR
ch
“Yo Tannenbaum” is a new arrangement of one of the great all time holiday tunes “Oh Tannenbaum.” It goes through a vari-
O
ety of tempos and moods, all which require a slightly different approach.
ur
When the band is playing the opening chorale, keep this mantra in your head: blend…pitch...blend…pitch. And no vibrato,
please! The opening should be nice and quiet, almost reverent. Then, at measure 25 it goes into a Count Basie groove, and
P
the rules change. It doesn’t get very loud yet, but it should definitely swing with a nice, laid back attitude. That is until
measure 47, where the tempo ramps up, and the chart kicks into a twisting bebop statement of the theme. Like all difficult
e w
es
passages, practice these slowly and gradually work them up to speed.
At measure 109 the rhythm section drops out, so the saxes need to concentrate on keeping the time steady. Blow though
ir
each phrase and keep the rhythmic pulse moving. The same thing applies for the brass at measure 125. There’s a tricky lick
e
at measure 131—don’t let it trip you up! (Yeah, I know, they’re all tricky!). Keep the ensemble tight and mobile at the shout
qu
chorus measure 141 and keep in mind you don’t have to blow loudly. Save the real intensity for measure 159 when the
tempo drops back down. From there to the end, it’s full out big band, just the way we like it!
s i
Hope you enjoy “Yo Tannenbaum.”
