Design For Combined Axial and Bending (Columns EC2) PDF

The document summarizes the process used by Tekla Structural Designer to design columns for combined axial and bending loads according to EC2. It determines the neutral axis position where the ratio of moment limits equals the ratio of applied moments and axial resistance equals the applied axial force. It then compares the resultant applied moment to the resultant moment resistance to calculate moment utilization. This iterative approach is preferred over the simplified EC2 method as it has a wider range of application.

Design for Combined Axial and Bending (Columns: EC2)

Tekla Structural Designer designs the column for an applied axial force and applied bending
about one or both axes of the section. In the case of biaxial bending, a resultant moment is
created for the combination of the applied moments.
An iterative approach is applied determined from first principles. This involves the calculation of
the neutral axis position (rotation and depth) at which the ratio of the moment limits in each
direction is equal to the ratio of the applied moments and the resultant axial resistance of the
section is equal to the applied axial force.
When the final neutral axis angle has been found, the program then compares the resultant
applied moment with the resultant moment resistance to find the moment utilization ratio:

√(M2major) + (M2minor) / √(M2major,res) + (M2minor,res) ≤ 1.0

where

Mmajor = Moment about the major axis

Mminor = Moment about the minor axis

Mmajor, res = Moment of resistance about the major axis

Mminor, res = Moment of resistance about the minor axis

Tekla Structural Designer adopts the above approach in preference to the simplified method
specified in equation 5.39 of EC2 as it has a wider range of application.
