Ton of Turkey
Every year our church family comes together to make sure other families
do not go without a turkey dinner at Thanksgiving. We will be collecting
frozen turkeys and other non-perishable food items for a turkey dinner on
Sundays, November 4, 11 and 18. Don’t miss out on this incredible op-
portunity to put your gratitude to God for your own blessings into action by
responding to the needs of others.

Operation Christmas Child has been delivering shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in need around
the world for 25 years. Each box brings not only the excitement of receiving a new toy, maybe for the
first time, but also an opportunity to learn about Jesus. Each child that receives a shoebox gift also
receives The Greatest Gift Gospel booklet. Many have the opportunity to participate in a follow-up
discipleship program, The Greatest Journey, which teaches them to faithfully follow Christ and share
Him with others.
We hope you will support this important mission project by filling a shoebox with a special new toy
and other fun smaller items. Please do NOT include candy, gum, toothpaste, seeds, liquids, medica-
tions or breakable items. There are instructions on packing a shoebox on the inside of the shoebox and on the brochure/mailing la-
bels. You will decide if your gift is for a boy or girl ages 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 years old.
A $9 donation to cover shipping costs is requested and will save our Mission budget that expense. You may insert a personal check
or cash into the envelope attached with the mailing label OR you may donate online using a credit card which allows you to track
the destination of your gift. If you donate online, you will print your label for a boy/girl of a specific age and a receipt will be sent
to your email address.
This year we are also offering an opportunity to participate in Operation Christmas Child by donating $25 and we will prepare your
shoebox, including shipping costs. Make your check payable to FHPC and note “shoebox.
However you decide to participate in this important mission project, please include prayer for the children receiving the gifts that
they will feel loved and that the gifts will be the beginning of a lifetime relationship with Jesus Christ. Pray also for the volunteers,
local and international, for making this project successful.
Return your Shoebox Gifts to the Narthex or Fellowship Center by Sunday, November 11. You may also drop them off at the
office during working hours.

Our local PBS TV station KAET started a series May 22 titled “The Great American Read” that explores and celebrates the power
of reading, told through the prism of America’s best loved novels as chosen in a national survey. The list of 100 books contains a
broad range of fictional titles, authors, time periods, countries, genres and subject matter. Throughout the summer, anyone could
vote for their favorite book on the list. Voting closed Oct. 17 and the top book was to be revealed Oct. 23 (since our newsletter
deadline for November was October 15, you will have to go to the PBS website to learn which book won.)
Vivian and I thought it would be interesting to see how many of the books on the list are in our church library. Since the list is
fiction, religious works were not included. But some of the books are definitely religious. These are the books we have and they
are available for check out:

Christians follow the Prince of Peace, so war is a dilemma that often challenges
people of faith. Some Christians are pacifists, while others believe in a “just
war.” Many believe that the goals of freedom, justice, equality and democracy
are worth the cost required.
Whatever individual Christians decide about any given conflict, most Christians
believe that men and women who strive to make this world free of tyrants are to
be respected. As Winston Churchill said, “Never in the field of human conflict
was so much owed by so many to so few.”
Thank you to all the men and women who served or are now serving our country.

Gratitude, said Martin Luther, is “the basic Christian attitude.” Yet gratitude
is much more than a state of mind. Often it’s a decision, and it becomes an BLESSED ARE…..
act of humility when we recognize our depravity—and our need for a
Savior. Blessed are those who have learned
The 10 disgraced lepers who beg Jesus for mercy (see Luke 17:11-19) are to admire but not envy;
described as allogenes, Greek for “outcast.” (All humans, sick with sin, fit to follow but not imitate;
that description!) The leper who returned to give thanks received more that to praise but not flatter;
just physical healing, according to scripture. When Jesus says “Your faith and to lead but not manipulate.
has made you well,” he uses the Greek that means “Your faith has saved
you.” The grateful leper, recognizing his depravity, humbly decides to re-
turn and give thanks, knowing—through faith, that his skin and his soul have
been healed.

Sunday, October 7, 2018 was a special day here at FHPC. The Women’s
Ministry Fellowship organized a wonderful time of gathering after services
where they presented all the different ways women can become involved
here at FHPC. There was a French theme throughout and the food was
fabulous.
After the people of Shechem made a poor decision about who would rule as their king, Gideon’s son Jotham told them a parable.
In Judges 9:8-15, the trees had difficulty finding a willing leader. The olive tree, fig tree and grape vine all declined, saying they
didn’t want to leave their important production jobs. Finally out of options, the trees asked the wretched, thorny bramble bush
to be king. Although this wild shrub wasn’t welcome on anyone’s land, still it was a plant. And it was willing to rule if the trees
announced their allegiance. The trees opted for the worst of the worst.
When the most worthy, qualified people neglect to step up and lead, results—and morale—suffer. Where can your expertise and
passion best be put to use in God’s Kingdom?

Kansas pastor Jack Wellman has been credited with the insight that “there is a certain genius in generosity.” He ex-
plains that when we open our hands—figuratively speaking— to allow something to pass through our fingers, rather
than holding it with tightly clenched fists, God can give us new blessings.
“God cannot pour more into hands that are already clinging tightly to what they hold,” says Wellman. Whether material
goods or time, ideas or talents, money or energy, the gifts that God has given us so generously are to be shared just as
freely with others. With our hands continually open to receive, give and receive again, God’s genius cycle of generosity
goes on and on.
