Staircase Force and Motor Design Analysis

The document calculates the forces, power requirements, and design specifications for an electric staircase. It determines that the maximum force on the stairs is 1330.3 N. It then calculates that a 1.5 kW motor turning at 1500 rpm could provide the necessary 931.27 W power requirement, while withstanding a torque of 9.549 Nm. A 16 mm diameter steel shaft is sufficient to withstand the torque stresses. Ball bearings with a 28 mm diameter and 8 mm width can withstand the radial and axial loads of 1364.14 N and 1330.3 N respectively.

Maximum weight of single man=100 kg

=100 x 10 N
=1000 N
Resultant force calculation:
Finding angle of inclination of stairs:
θ=35.53ᴼ Fy

Fx

Fx=Fcosθ=1000 x cos(35.53)=813.81 N
Fy=Fsinθ=1000 x sin(35.53)=581.12 N
Resultant force
Fr =((Fx2)+(Fy2)+2(Fx)(Fy)cosθ)1/2
=((813.812)+(581.122)+2(813.81)(581.12)cos35.53)1/2
= 1330.30 N
Linear velocity calculation
Distance of staircase=5.16 m (by measurement)
Time required for ascending = 7.6 sec
Time required for descending = 6.9 sec
Selecting max. of both;
Velocity=distance/time=5.16/7.6=0.6789 m/s
But design is being done by not only considering handicapped and old population
but also for normal man.
So it must be feasible. So considering higher
velocity i.e. 0.7 m/s
V=0.7 m/s

7.1 Motor selection

power = force x velocity
=1330.3 x 0.7
=931.27 Watt
But while selecting motor, ηchain and ηgearbox needs to be
considered HP= (Fr x V)/(η x 4500)
η= overall efficiency
η=(ηg)p x ηc
ηg=efficiency of gearbox
ηc=efficiency of chain
p=no. of stages
η=ηchain x (ηg )p
assuming, η=75%
η=89% ……. (Ref. =533 V. B. Bhandari)
single stage worm gearbox
η=0.89 x (0.75)1
η=0.6675
HP=(1330.3 x 42)/(0.6675 x 4500)
=1.414 kW
Std motor=1.5 kW; N=1500rpm
P=(2ΠNT)/60=(2Π x 1500 x T)/60
T=9.549 Nm

7.2 Design of shaft:

Material=45C8
Syt=380 N/mm2
Sut=600 N/mm2
Sys=0.30Syt=114 N/mm2
Sus=0.18Syt=108 N/mm2
Whichever is minimum
Considering keyway effect=0.75Sus=81 N/mm2
Considering F.O.S.=3
Τs=Sus/Nf=81/3=27 N/mm2
Ts=16T/Πd3
27=(16 x 9.549 x 103)/(Π x d3)
d=12.16 ……….. but std. step is 14
d=14 mm

considering Nf=5
d=16 mm
assuming reduction ratio as 35%
G = N1/N2
35 = 1500/N2
N2 = 42.85 rpm
V = rω
0.7 = r x (2ΠN2)/60
0.7 = r x (2Π x 42.85)/60
r=0.155 m
d=0.3 m

7.3 Design of bearing:

Ball bearing
Fa=1330.3 N
Fr x r =Tr
Fr= 1364.14 N
Fa/Fr=1330.3/1364.14=0.975
Considering Pg. No. 575; (V. B. Bhandari)
From chart
For d=14; D=28; B=8
Co=2240 N
Fa/Co=0.50
From chart 15.4……….(Pg. No. 574; V. B. Bhandari)
Axial load factor; X=0.56
Radial load factor; Y=1
