Tutorial 1 PDF

This document is a course document for KIG1007 Mechanics of Materials taught at the University of Malaya. It contains two sample problems related to axial and torsional loads. The first problem asks the student to determine the allowable load on a linkage system given ultimate stresses and a factor of safety of 3.0. The second problem asks the student to calculate the reaction torques at supports A and B for a bar under a 100 N-m torque load where segments AC and CB have different diameters but equal lengths. The document is authored by Associate Professor Dr. Andri Andriyana and contains two practice problems for students to solve related to axial and torsional mechanics.

AL 1: Axial and Torsional Loads KIG1007 Mechanics of Materials

Problem 1
Each of the steel links AB and CD is connected to a support and to member BCE by 25-mm-diameter steel pins
acting in single shear. Knowing that the ultimate shearing stress is 210 MPa for the steel used in the pins and that
the ultimate normal stress is 490 MPa for the steel used in the links, determine the allowable load P if an overall
factor of safety of 3.0 is desired.

Problem 2
The bar ACB shown is fixed at both ends and loaded by a torque of 100 N·m at point C. Segments AC and CB
of the bar have diameters of 10 mm and 20 mm respectively. Both segments have the same length of 100 mm.
Determine the reaction torques at the supports A and B.
