THE CUCUMBER EFFECT
CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEMS AND ITS BACKGROUND
This chapter includes the background and purpose of the study, theoretical
framework, conceptual framework, statement of the problem, hypothesis, scope and
limitations of the study, and the definition of the terms.
Background and Purpose of the Study
Growing up is one of the characteristics of living things. As living things grow
up, they have to go through certain processes. A child growing up to become a
teenager will also go through some changes. The child will have to go through some
skin problems as the child’s hormones develop.
As a teenager, the health of the skin is an important part of being confident.
Skin problems such as pimples and dark spots could bring damages to the skin if they
are not being taken care of properly, and thus reduce the confidence of a teenager.
This is why other researchers start making skin products. But not all skin products
that people buy in store are natural and healthy for the skin. And buying skin care
products will add up life expenses. So some people decided to make their own
products from natural resources such as fruits.
One of the fruits that is known to be useful and healthy for the skin is
cucumber. It contains antioxodants to reduce dark circles under the eyes. It also
whitens and smoothens the skin. The minerals in cucumber can also tighten the
texture of the skin. Some people mix cucumber with other fruits because they want a
better result. For example, they mix cucumber with honey, or with egg, or even
yoghurt to make skin masks .
2
Conceptual Framework
In this project, the researchers aim to find out which of the mixes will bring a
better result on the skin than the other by comparing the mix of cucumber with lemon
and the mix of cucumber with avocado, considering that both lemon and avocado are
also good for the skin. The result of this research will be useful for teenagers or even
adults who are interested in making home remedies for their face instead of buying
products at the mall.

Statement of the Problem
The general objective of this research is to produce an effective and beneficial
face mask using cucumber as the main ingredient and avocado and lemon as the side
ingredients.
Specifically, it sought to answer these questions:
1. How is the face mask produced from the cucumber and the side ingredients?
2. What is the level of acceptability of the face mask in each of the two set up as
perceived by selected respondents in terms of:
2.1. Durability
2.2. Effectiveness
2.3. Compatibility
2.4. Cost Effectiveness
3. Is there a significant difference between the level of acceptability of the face mask
in each set up such as:
3.1. Cucumber and Avocado
3.2. Cucumber and Lemon
4
Hypothesis
This study will be testing the alternative hypothesis that there is significant
difference on the level of acceptability of the face mask in each set up.
Significance of the Study
Face mask is a product a lot of teenagers use in order to take a good care of
their skin considering that it is the time where a person will go through a lot of skin
problems. The researchers aim to have a homemade face mask which will be cheaper
and easier for teenagers to use. And since the materials are very common and can be
found in the fridge, you can also do it on your own on your spare time.
Scope and Limitation
This study is focused on producing a homemade face mask. It concentrates
with the effectiveness of the said study.
The researchers cover the study through the vicinity of Sekolah Mondial,
2016. In this research, the ingredients that will be used are cucumber, lemon and
avocado that we intend to acquire from supermarkets. In addition to that, the
researchers will only study about the physical and chemical characteristics and
composition that will support our product that we will be using.
The face mask must be done by following the correct instructions. Excessive
use of the ingredients might bring negative effects to the user.
5
Definition of Terms
These are the following words which are emphasized in the whole conduction
of this investigatory project.
Face mask is a protective mask covering the nose and mouth or nose and
eyes.
Cucumber is a long green-skinned fruit with watery flesh, usually eaten raw
in salads or pickled.
Lemon is a pale yellow oval citrus fruit with thick skin and fragrant, acidic
juice, the juice of seven lemons.
Avocado is a pear-shaped fruit with a rough leathery skin and smooth, oily
edible flesh.
Acceptability is the quality of being tolerated or allowed; the quality of being
accepted.
Durability is the ability to withstand wear, pressure, or the damage
Effectiveness is the the degree which something is successful in producing a
desired result
Cost Effectiveness is the degree to which something is effective or productive
in relation to its cost
Mixing is putting or combining together to form one substance or mass.

CHAPTER II
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Review of Related Literature
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family,
Cucurbitaceae. It is a creeping vine that bears cylindrical fruits that are used as culinary
vegetables. There are three main varieties of cucumber: slicing, pickling, and burpless.
Within these varieties, several different cultivars have emerged. The cucumber is
originally from Southern Asia, but now grows on most continents. Many different
varieties are traded on the global market. In North America, the term "wild cucumber"
can refer to plants in the genera Echinocystis and Marah, but these are not closely
related. Much like tomatoes and squash they are often also perceived, prepared and
eaten as vegetables. Cucumbers are usually more than 90% water.
The lemon (Citrus × limon) is a species of small evergreen tree native to Asia.
The tree's ellipsoidal yellow fruit is used for culinary and non-culinary purposes
throughout the world, primarily for its juice, which has both culinary and cleaning
uses. The pulp and rind (zest) are also used in cooking and baking. The juice of the
lemon is about 5% to 6% citric acid, which gives a sour taste. The distinctive sour
taste of lemon juice makes it a key ingredient in drinks and foods such as lemonade
and lemon meringue pie.
The avocado (Persea americana) is a tree native to Mexico and Central
America, classified in the flowering plant family Lauraceae along with cinnamon,
camphor and bay laurel. Avocado or alligator pear also refers to the fruit, botanically a
7
large berry that contains a single seed. Avocados are commercially valuable and are
cultivated in tropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world. They have a
green-skinned, fleshy body that may be pear-shaped, egg-shaped, or spherical.
Commercially, they ripen after harvesting. Avocado trees are partially self-pollinating
and often are propagated through grafting to maintain a predictable quality and
quantity of the fruit.
Research Design
The study conducted a comparative study. In this case, the researchers made a
comparison between cucumber lemon mask and cucumber avocado mask. This study
will also make use of developmental method and descriptive method.
The researchers made a developmental method to examinate the capability of
cucumber, lemon and avocado as the ingredients for homemade face mask. This
design defines and analyzes how the researchers actually developed the past study
about cucumber, lemon and avocado as face mask.
Descriptive design describes a situation of the area of interest, factually and
accurately. In the use of this research design, the researchers interacts with the
participant involving surveys or interviews to collect necessary information. This also
includes provide information about the naturally occurring phenomenon. It also
include observational studies of the researchers in an environment and studies
involving data collection using existing records.

Setting of the Study
This study was conducted at Sekolah Mondial. The school is located at Pasir
Putih, Batam Center, Batam, Indonesia. Initially, the school is known as Sekolah Tahu
Kedepan, but after much deliberation, the school was called Sekolah Mondial. The
registration office was established in Mall Batam Center in April 2003. The
registration for the new school year, the construction and repair of 10 shop buildings
in Sei Panas owned by LPTK were soon completed. Through word of mouth, the new
national plus school under the leadership of Mrs. Irma spread across Batam. Students
starting from Playgroup to SMP 1, aged about 2 s.d. 12 years came to register.
In the second school year, the was a significant increase in student enrollment,
which is from 440 students s.d. 1200 students. The school building in Sei Panas is no
longer able to accommodate the student population. Plans to move to a better place is
still in the process but unfortunately, before the plan can be realized fully, undesirable
events occurred. On March 8, 2005, the students are forced to leave the school
9
building. It is a miracle that the new school building at Jl. Yos Sudarso was completed
within two weeks.
And in 2015, in order to have a better studying environment, Sekolah Mondial
moved to Pasir Putih, Batam Center.
10
Subject of the study
The subject of the study will be 10 respondents. This includes 2 middle school
students and 8 high school students. These people are chosen purposively to evaluate
the effectiveness, durability, cost effectiveness and acceptability of the homemade
face masks.
Bunch of samplings are given to the respondents as they answer the
researcher-made questionnaire checklist.
Sources of data
In doing this study, the researchers used the references such as internet to find
some information about the effect of cucumber, lemon and avocado in our lives and
information to widen their knowledge about this project. By the use of encyclopedias,
dictionaries and Thesaurus, they get to know some ideas that will help with their
project.
With these references, the researchers are able to show detail by detail the
procedure and purpose of the study.
The researchers gathered data by the means of validated researcher-made
questionnaire checklist which is patterned from Likert scale. It is filled by selected
respondents.
Procedures of the Study
This part deals with all the process involved in the study. This study has been
done with the agreement of the researcher’s interest to make homemade face mask
11
from cucumber, lemon and avocado. In the beginning, the researchers look for, and
assemble knowledge with regards to their research.
With the help of the people around the researchers, they started developing the
homemade face mask. When all the procedures are done, and the face mask was
produced, it is evaluated by the respondents through the researcher-made
questionnaires. This is done for the researchers to know what does people can say
about their product, in its physical or other characteristics. By their feedbacks,
suggestions and comments the researchers could have more knowledge about the
study they conducted.
After collecting the information and data needed in the study, it was tallied,
computed and interpreted.
And now, the face mask was successfully made by following the correct
procedures to be done and through the interpretation of data information regarding to
the study.
