1. Figure 1 is a Process and Instrumentation Diagram (PID) that shows the basic relationships
and flow paths found in a process unit. This has been drawn carelessly with a few
equipment and instruments missing. Use the process and instrument symbols shown in
Table 1 to correct for the followings:
a. The product from the top of the column is cooled by a shell and tube heat exchanger.
(5 Marks)
b. The flow leaving the top of the drum is controlled by a pneumatically controlled valve
using the measured pressure in the drum. This will then be condensed using a water-
cooled condenser before joining the feed line to product tank 1.
(15 Marks)
c. The flow from the bottom of the drum is withdrawn by a centrifugal pump. A
pneumatically controlled valve is placed after the pump to control the flow.
(10 marks)
d. The product line taken from tray two, fitted with a basic valve, is used to feed a mixing
reactor tank.
(5 marks)
e. Product tanks 1 and 2 are equipped with pressure relief valves (PRV).
(5 marks)
f. Product from the bottom of the reactor tank is withdrawn with a centrifugal pump. The
line flow is controlled by a check valve placed after the pump.

2. In the production of bean oil shown in Figure 2, beans containing 13.0 wt% oil and 87.0%
solids are ground and fed to a stirred tank (the extractor) along with the recycled stream of
liquid n-hexane. The feed ratio is 3 kg hexane/ kg beans. The ground beans are suspended
in the liquid and essentially all of the oil in the beans is extracted into the hexane. The
extractor effluent passes to a filter. The filter cake contains 75.0 wt% bean solids and the
balance bean oil and hexane, the latter two in the same ratio in which they emerge from the
extractor. The filter cake is discarded and the liquid filtrate is fed to a heated evaporator in
which the hexane is vaporized and the oil remains as a liquid. The oil is stored in drums and
shipped. The hexane vapor is subsequently cooled and condensed and the liquid hexane
condensate is recycled to the extractor.

Using suitable symbol in Table 1, draw the Process Flow Diagram for the process. Add in
the diagram the following information.
a. A complete PFD and an input and output of the process within the equipments involved.
(20 marks)
b. The flow of hexane is fed by a centrifugal pump and controlled by a control valve.
(10 marks)
c. It has been suggested that a heat exchanger might be added to the process. This unit is
a shell and tube heat exchanger. The liquid filtrate would pass from the filter through the
inside of the tubes and then go to the evaporator.
(5 marks)
d. The flow rate of liquid filtrate from the heat exchanger into the evaporator will be
controlled pneumatically by taking a temperature reading of the evaporator.
(10 marks)
e. The evaporator is equipped with a pressure relief valve.
