Admiral Merchants Success Overview
Admiral Merchants Success Overview
One of the Core Values in that Strategic Profile instructs management of Escort/Pilot car policy pg. 6
Admiral to listen to our agent and driver partners and to work in partnership with them to
help Admiral achieve our goals and the goals of our partners. We do that in many ways and Trucking is at its best pg.6
in many places. While we are proud of the technology developed and managed by Tim
Neid and Dishon Smoot, we all acknowledge that we are not a technology company. Our
technology supports our efforts to communicate directly and often with our agent and Driver Visit pg.7-8
driver partners. We do that every day on the phone. We do that most days when we host
drivers who are passing through or near the Twin Cities, and we do it in various face-to- Accounting Corner pg.9
face meetings we have with our agent and driver partners throughout the year.
Recently, members of the Admiral team met with a number of our contractor and agent Credit Tips pg.9
partners at our annual driver appreciation BBQ in London, Ohio. You will see a number of
photos from that event in this issue of Ship’s Log and on a number of Facebook pages, Social Connections pg.10
including my own. It was great to see everyone and to listen to the stories of our success. I
am especially grateful to the contractors and agents who told me of the many instances of
support each had received from more than one member of the Admiral Merchants team. New Voice pg. 10
In addition, our Sales teammates – Brent Layton, Mary Alfano and Tim Burke – spend Safety driving awards pg.11
significant amounts of time meeting with agents in their offices, their homes and in cafes
adjacent to those places. Each of those calls is directed to reminding our agents that every
member of the Admiral Merchants team is committed to their success. At almost every Update from Safety pg.12
one of those meetings, Brent, Mary and Tim are thanked by our agent partners, often with
the observation that Admiral Merchants is the best carrier any of those agents has ever BBQ 2018 pg.13-15
represented!
I would be remiss if I did not mention Admiral’s peripatetic Director of Recruiting, Wes Special OPS pg.16-17
Dyer. I think I talk to Wes two or three times a week and I believe he has never been in the
same place twice. While the main challenge Wes faces is recruiting drivers to apply to
Communication & Commitment
Admiral Merchants, he also believes that a significant part of his job is to follow up with
those who have recently joined us. While most in the industry confront a serious driver pg.18
shortage, the Admiral fleet has grown significantly this year. Thanks to Mike Griffin, Kim
Nelson and Bonnie Bley in Contractor Services for the great job of processing those Top 20 Drivers by Equipment
applications generated by Wes and by other referrals. However, when Wes talks to those
Type YTD pg.19
contractors who have recently joined us, he is almost always reminded about the great job
we do for the drivers after they join us. Almost all are assigned to Operations Manager Rob Zempel, who works diligently
to insure that every contractor’s transition to Admiral Merchants is smooth.
Finally, I spend a lot of time on the road with various members of the management team, visiting with our agents across
the country. In early May, I visited Admiral Agents in Alabama, Mississippi and Texas with Mary Alfano, Tim Neid and
Doug Milroy. In mid-July, I visited agents in West Virginia and Ohio with Brent Layton, Doug Milroy, Megan Erickson,
Kelsey Rossow and Tim Neid. Finally, in early August, I visited agents in Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, California and New
Mexico with Tim Burke, Doug Milroy, Tim Neid, Tom Bobrycki and Jim Bemis. At every stop along the way, we discussed
with our agent partners how Admiral Merchants could help each agent grow that agent’s business. At every stop along
the way, we were reminded by our partners of the great job that members of the Admiral Merchants team were doing.
At every stop, we were reminded that, again, Admiral Merchants is the best carrier any of these agents has ever
represented.
What’s the common thread here? The common thread, I believe, is that we are visiting our partners on their turf, asking
every one of them what we can do to support them, and meeting their needs with superior service. In doing that, we are
helping our agent and driver partners realize their dreams of running a successful small business. That is exactly what we
are called to do by our Strategic Profile.
This doesn’t happen by accident. We are indeed very fortunate that this year we are working in one of the best economic
environments for trucking in the memory of those of us with gray hair. But that is not all. In fact, the Admiral Merchants
team is delivering on our promise of exceptional service. Every one of us works hard at our job with the hope of helping
our partners realize their goals, realize their dreams. From that, every member of the Admiral Merchants team takes
great satisfaction.
So as we say every time we meet with one of our partners, “Thanks for the business.” Every one of the agents and every
one of the contractors we work with could take their business elsewhere. They choose Admiral Merchants, I believe,
because of the quality of our service, because of the reputation we have for quality service. It is our job to deliver on that
promise every day, and I believe every member of the Admiral Merchants team does. So, to every member of the Admiral
Merchants team, thanks for what you do. Thanks for your commitment to every one of our agent and driver partners.

MIDYEAR REVIEW
We are all aware that 2018 has been a fantastic year for Admiral. Some of the more obvious metrics such
as revenue, quality of loads available, or driver satisfaction is visible to all within the organization. A driver
or agent doesn’t need to sit in on our monthly status meetings to know that 2018 has been rolling along
like no year prior. But many of you are not privy to the claims department’s numbers. I am happy to report
that Admiral Drivers have been just safe as they were successful the first half of this year. A few examples:
Our cargo claims rate has been dropping annually, and it has reached a new low of 0.064%
Our DOT recordable accident rate is at 0.33%--the lowest it’s been in a decade.
Our preventable accidents are at the second lowest rate they’ve been in the last five years.
Our cash reserve for claim payments is rising (meaning we’re paying out at a lower rate than we budgeted for).
I have the pleasure to work with such high level professionals who make my job so much easier. I usually say that we can
always do more to reduce our exposure, but these results call for an unqualified thank you and congratulations. I won’t
bring up how dash cams create great evidence in contested claims, or how we can always take a second look on the
condition or securement of cargo before leaving the shipper’s yard. This isn’t the time to bring up defensive driving
techniques that can help avoid accidents caused by other drivers. This is just a time to let all of our Admiral drivers know
that they have done a great job this year. Thanks again for all you do.
As always, if you are involved in an accident, incident, or have a cargo issue, the Claims Department is here to help you 24
hours a day, seven days a week at the following numbers: 8:00 AM-5:00 PM (CST) -- 800-972-8864 ext. 8191 Outside of
business hours – 612-991-5923.

Escort/Pilot Car Policy
If you are using a pilot car service for your trip, please make sure they are on the Preferred Pilot Car List, or make
sure that they are set up and have everything on file to run with Admiral. The Preferred List can be found under
the Permits tab on the Admiral website. If you pay an escort directly they still need to be set up with Admiral.
Once you pay them, make sure you Transflo a copy of the escort invoice in with your paperwork with the invoice
marked PAID, and call us to let us know you are sending in the invoice so we can reimburse you correctly. If the
pilot car company is going to invoice us, please call us to let us know you had an escort on the trip so we can make
sure all invoices are accounted for and avoid having to rebill the trip later.
If you want to use a pilot car company that is not set up with Admiral, just have them get in touch with us and we can get
them set up fairly quickly so you can use them for your trip. If you use an escort that is not an approved pilot car company,
you will not be reimbursed for the amount. The reason we require them to be set up with Admiral is so that we can ensure
they are running with the correct amount of insurance and to make sure that Admiral is covered if anything happens. Please
let us know if you have any questions.

Permit Manager
The Admiral Contractors are making more money this year, and we are more productive now with each
tractor that is leased on to Admiral than we have ever been, compared to any other time in the history of this
company. We are “Making Hay While the Sun is Shining”. We all also understand that these high rates will NOT last
forever! I would like to say that we will be able to have a few years of this, but, there is no crystal ball or guarantee that
these rates will continue at this level, next year or next month. If there is one guarantee that is certain, it is that we can
count on there being continuous changes in the Trucking/Transportation Industry, as history as always shown us.
Settlements are larger and better than ever, and it’s easy to say let’s enjoy some extra time off. Your time off is so
important to your family and yourself, here at Admiral we want you to have your well-deserved rest! I believe that we also
must all remind each other that change does and will happen, and we must plan for that. When the freight rates do go back
down, will you be ready? Will your tire and maintenance accounts be heathy enough for the next break down? Will your
trailer decking be in good shape? Is your engine going to last the next 3 years? These items and many more jump out and
surprise us when we least expect it. Will you be prepared? Admiral is always concerned for our Contractor partner’s
business stability, and well-being. After you have had your well-deserved time off, take caution in taking those few extra
days off, plan ahead and think about those surprises and changes that most assuredly will jump out at us, as they always do
and be prepared for it. Now is the time to “Make Hay while the Sun Is Shining.”
As we end the summer driver season I want to thank each and every one of our Contractor partners for keeping the
motoring public safe. Please double check your daily inspection and drive safe.

Vice President of Operations

Credit Tips
Below are a few reminders that will help your business
Do not commit to giving credit to your customer until the credit department has completed the
credit approval process. Please keep in mind that Admiral requires credit approval by the credit
department on all new customers.
If your customer is compliant with Admiral’s credit policy and credit is granted, you will be
notified that the account has been set up and you will be given the customer number and the
customer’s credit limit by the credit Specialist working on the application.
If credit is not granted to the customer, as per Admiral Credit policy and guidelines, the load may possibly have to
be shipped on an Advanced Payment basis. Any loads will have to be paid for in full before the driver picks up the
load.
If a customer is identified as a NO load, NO APR customer as per Admiral Policy and guidelines, we will not be able
to accept any loads. You will be notified by the credit specialist as to the customers’ status and how to respond.
Admiral policy states that a customer in business less than six months can only ship with Admiral on an APR basis.
Customers in business six to twelve months must complete the credit application and the owner must sign the
personal guarantee in ordered to be considered for credit with Admiral as per policy.

Well, it seems like that is where people who are interested in our business like to hang out and it compliments our website.
It’s where we get to know each other in a relaxed environment. We can make jokes and have fun with people in all corners

Economically, it promotes all we do. Others seeing this kind of camaraderie want to be part of it. This must be a really great

New Voice
You might have noticed a new voice on the phone. I’m Kelsea Briggs and I’m the new receptionist at Admiral. I
recently graduated college and am excited to be working full time. When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time
with my two dogs Thor, and Scrambles, and my hamster Mr. Noodles. You can also find me playing video games
(Zelda is my all-time favorite.) Since sports season is on us I will share that I love watching college basketball… GO
SPARTANS! And I’m a big fan of the Lions (even if they are bad). I’m very excited to be a part of the Admiral team;
everyone has been so kind and welcoming! I look forward to working with you all.

I wanted to give a quick update as to where we are on the Safety awards. I have started working on July – December of
2017. I am happy to say July, August and September have been completed and sent off to the award center. I am working
daily and will have 2017’s completed by the end of September. With that being said, I will have 2018 cleaned up by the end
of the year. Thank you all for your continued patience. It’s coming!

Update from Safety
Welcome Angi Weicherding:
We have a new Safety Specialist in the department! Many of you have already met Angi in person or on the
phone, but if you haven’t, please take the time to call and say Hello! She has been active with the MTA Trucking
Skills Competition and has driving background. Angi has jumped in with both feet and already impresses everyone
with her energy and professionalism. She is a great addition to the department and to the Admiral team.
CSA scores:
The majority of our contractors have excellent CSA scores, and more than half of the roadside inspections we
receive have no violations with points. I would very much like to thank all of those contractors who have represented
Admiral with such great professionalism and dedication. While our current CSA scores are too high, without those
contractors our scores would be even higher. The current Vehicle Maintenance score is at 90%, our HOS score remains at
73% and our Unsafe Driving score has climbed to 28% as of July 2018. Because of these scores, we continue to have a
“must inspect” rating for roadside inspections. These scores are percentile rankings that compare us to our peers.
To help illustrate what this means I will show how we compare to some of our peers. The percentile rankings are derived
from our measure which is calculated by dividing our total points by the number of inspections. Our measure for Vehicle
Maintenance is currently 4.43. Here are the measures of some of our competitors - Greatwide Dallas Mavis, 3.94 – Jones,
3.53, Keen Transport, 1.64 – ATS Specialized, 1.69 – Mercer, 2.99 – and Landstar, 2.58. Our measure for HOS is currently
0.27. Here are the measures of our competitors – EW Wylie, 0.11 – Buchanan Hauling, 0.06 – Bennett, 0.25 – and Mercer,
0.10.
Our measure for Unsafe Driving is currently 1.68. Here are the measures of our competitors – Packard, 1.11 – Greentree,
1.53 – CRST/Malone, 1.44 – Maverick Transportation, 1.15 – and Keen Transport, 0.78.
We need the help of all of our professional contractors to solve this problem and improve our scores. These scores affect
each and every one of us. Please help your fellow Admiral contractors to achieve clean inspections and lower our CSA
scores.
Personal conveyance:
I have written about this in past articles, but the FMCSA has provided some new guidance which may prove to be helpful.
Please note the following changes to the criteria for Personal Conveyance usage effective 6/1/2018;
1. The provision that the trailer must be unladen or detached no longer applies
2. You still may not advance yourself, with the exception of advancing from a shipper or consignee to the nearest
safe haven for a rest period.
3. You still may not conduct any trucking related activities, such as buying truck parts or taking the vehicle to be
serviced.
4. You must be Off Duty immediately prior to, and immediately following any Personal Conveyance period
As always, personal conveyance can be used on the ELD and the amount of miles traveled is not restricted by DOT
regulation. However, the DOT does ask Admiral to account for all instance of personal conveyance in excess of 25 miles.
Therefore Admiral does limit the miles to 25 per day on the ELD. This does NOT mean you cannot use personal Conveyance
for longer distances. If you go beyond the 25 mile limit you simply need to call either Suzanne or myself at the corporate
office and we can adjust your log after we confirm the circumstances.
If you have any questions about the ELD program, CSA scores, Personal Conveyance or Admiral Merchants Safety policies,
call Paul @ 800-972-8864 ext. 8140, Angi @ext. 8136 or Suzanne @ 8169.

2018 Driver BBQ
th
On Saturday, August 18 , from 11am to 4pm, Admiral hosted its annual Driver Appreciation BBQ at the Speedway
truck stop in London, Ohio. Earlier in the week, it looked like the weather was not going to cooperate with us, but
thankfully, on the day of the event; Mother Nature was in a good mood and provided us with beautiful weather.
This year’s BBQ was one of the best-attended events we’ve ever held; with between 90 and 100 people, including
drivers, agents and office staff, all came together for the day. Admiral staff in attendance was: Brian Short, Doug
Milroy, Brent Layton, Mike Griffin, Tim Neid, Paul Hinrichs, Angi Weicherding, Karen Preusser, Rob Zempel, Missy
Swenson, Matt Bunnell, Tim Burke and Wes Dyer.
For the second time, we had the event catered by JP’s BBQ from Columbus, OH. The food was delicious and enjoyed by all.
Owner, Carol, and her staff, were on site to tend to our every need. They cooked up brisket, pulled pork, and oversized
chicken legs, along with all the fixings. And we must not forget the brownies for dessert. Oh boy! Was it delicious!!
The event always provides a great opportunity for the team to get together with some of our drivers and show them how
much their hard work is appreciated. We raffled off lots of great prizes and every driver who attended also received 4 free
load straps. Some of our agents also attended and were able to connect with many of the drivers. For those who couldn’t
make it this year, we hope to see you all next year.
Thanks to all who came and a special thanks to those who helped organize and set the event up. Your help was very much
appreciated. We look forward to seeing everyone next year!!
Mike Griffin,
Director, Contractor Services
In signing a confirmation as an Agent for Admiral you are agreeing to the all requirements on that document
(load time, delivery time, special equipment requirements, terms etc.) If those are not communicated in
writing to the driver and they are not met, that’s when miscommunication happens. Send an electronic copy to the Driver
and make sure he or she reads it. This protects all parties involved from an unpleasant situation.
That covers the dispatch part; now let’s talk about changes after the load is on the truck. Any deviation from the original
rate confirmation requirements must be agreed to in writing before the load is off the truck. This is an issue that is more
prominent when dealing with freight brokers. Most of us have had an experience with an issue of this type. Do not accept
“get the load delivered then we’ll figure it out’, Get something in writing now. If you are having trouble resolving an issue
before the loads is delivered… you will still have one after it is delivered too. If you get involved in situation like this and
need help reach out to your Sales Rep at the time its happening, not after load is delivered. Also, communicate all the
changes to the driver via email or text.
Admiral has focused over the years in having customers that are willing to pay above average rates. We’ve built these
relationships by providing the excellent service they want and avoiding the service issues (no shows, late deliveries etc.)
associated with using cheaper carriers.
Our goal as a Company has always been to deliver excellent transportation services. As many of our Agents know,
Customers regularly over the years have come to us to re-negotiate their rates, with the goal of saving them money. And
after all these years of dealing with this now is the time for us to go to them and ask for an increase, the market has never
been more in our favor. As an Agent you know your Customers better than anyone and you may be reluctant to ask for an
increase, but think of where your rates are compared to the market? It could be time to talk to your Customers and the
Admiral Sales team is here to assist. Please reach out to us.
With the lack of truck capacity to cover the loads available the “spot market” rates are more prevalent than ever. As
Contractor/Driver after making a Commitment to an Agent for your next load you may be offered a “better” load and be
tempted fall off your existing load. In reality, is there really a true “better load” than the one you have committed to? As in
giving the load back to an Agent, they in turn are giving it back to their Customer. Is this one seemingly “better” load worth
tarnishing your reputation with our Agent community? Is this one load worth making Admiral Look just like those other
Carriers the Customer chooses not to use? Is that one load worth jeopardizing your reputation with an Agent and Customer
that will still be loading you with good paying loads when business levels off or slows down again? Probably not.
As business partners we must be committed to one and other to insure our mutual success. We should all practice strong
timely and accurate communication and live up to our commitments to maintain our “Tradition of Integrity”.
