ABSTRACT
For determining the particle size distribution of a given sample,
Civil Engineers use Sieve Analysis or gradation test because it is one of
the most basic procedures and majorly used for design purposes. It is
also important because it can be used for finding the fineness modulus
of aggregates. In this process, graphical representations are always
helpful. It is allowing the material to pass through a series of sieves of
progressively smaller mesh size and weighing the amount of material
that is stopped by each sieve as a fraction of the whole mass.
PHOTOS OF SET-UP
We weighed the aggregates. We put the coarse aggregate on the top sieve.
We shaked it for more or less 5 minutes. We transfer the aggregates left on every sieve.
We transfer all the aggregates of every sieve. We weighed the aggregates left on every sieve.
Computation:
1. Calculating mass passed Massed passed = Total mass – Max retained
1 (25.4mm) = 6127.32g – 22.44g = 6104.88g
¾ (19.0mm) = 6104.88g – 158.10g = 5946.78g
½ (12.7mm) = 5946.78g – 584.12g = 5362.66g
3/8 (9.5mm) = 5362.66g – 868.08g = 4494.58g
4 (4.75mm) = 4494.58g – 2179.42g + 10.15g = 2305.01g
8 (2.38mm) = 2305.01g – 1192.61g + 71.09g = 1041.31g
16 (1.19mm) = 1041.31g – 160.63g + 179.45g = 701.23g
30 (0.595mm) = 701.23g – 147.74g + 237.63g = 315.86g
50 (0.297mm) = 315.86g – 66.62g + 86.05g = 163.19g
100 (0.150mm) = 163.19g – 48.90g + 19.81g = 94.48g
200 (0.075mm) = 94.48g – 59.12g + 9.97g = 25.39g
Pan = 25.39g - 20.44g + 4.95g = 0g
2. Calculating % passing to the nearest 0.1% of the total initial dry weight of the sample
% Passing = (Mass passed / Total) = 100
1 (25.4mm) = (6104.88g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 99.63%
¾ (19.0mm) = (5946.78g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 97.05%
½ (12.7mm) = 5362.66g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 87.52%
3/8 (9.5mm) = (4494.58g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 73.35%
4 (4.75mm) = (2305.01g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 37.62%
8 (2.38mm) = (1041.31g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 16.99%
16 (1.19mm) = (701.23g / 6127.32g) * 100 =11.44%
30 (0.595mm) = (315.86g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 5.15%
50 (0.297mm) = (163.19g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 2.66%
100 (0.150mm) = (94.48g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 1.15%
200 (0.075mm) = (25.39g / 6127.32g) * 100 = 0.004%
