SCBA Usage and Calculation Guidelines

The document discusses self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs), which allow users to breathe independently of the surrounding air quality. SCBAs contain high-pressure cylinders filled with compressed air or oxygen. Users are either "air breathers" using compressed air or "oxygen breathers" using compressed oxygen. The apparatus reduces pressure and supplies air to a face mask, allowing free movement. Usage time depends on cylinder capacity and pressure. Checklists are provided for pre-use, donning, use, and post-use procedures as well as SCBA locations onboard.

SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS:

SCBA requirement is listed under the SOLAS SECTION A.1/3.7. The method is to
carry a high pressure vessel filled up with air or oxygen for own breathing, and is
capable of self breathing regardless of the contaminated air by harmful gases, etc.
or decrease in oxygen density. This allows the user to act freely compared with
the air convey type one. On the other hand this restricts the time for use by the
quantity of air or oxygen filled up in the high pressure vessel.

Those using compressed air are called an air breather and those using
compressed oxygen are called an oxygen breather.

The air breather functions to supply the user with air discharged in the mask
through the air suction valves after reducing the pressure of compressed air filled
up in the vessel by the pressure regulator. The breathed air is exhausted in the air
through the breathing valve ensuring the user to act freely not to interfere with
his work.

As supply methods of air into the mask there are of the lung-power type and of
the positive pressure type. The lung power type one is to supply air into the mask
by the user’s breathing suction, while the latter is to supply the pressured air
usually higher than the atmospheric pressure at a certain ratio.

Air consumption formula:

Q= [V x (P1 –P2)]/ T1 – T2

Q: air consumption per minute

V: capacity of the bombe

P1: pressure before use

P2: pressure after use

T1: time of wearing mask.

T2: time of throwing off mask

Usable Time per One Unit of Bombe formula:

T = [V x P]/Q

T: usable time of one unit of bombe

V: Capacity of the air bombe

P: Maximum pressure of the air bombe.

MAKE: LIFEGEM

NO, OF SETS ONBOARD: 10

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apparatus pre-use check:

1. Check that the positive pressure is turned off by pushing the red switch on
the valve into housing.
2. Open cylinder valve
3. Read off pressure gauge. Pressure should be no less than 10% below the
filling pressure (i.e. 200 bar apparatus 180 bar).
4. Close the valve and check for leakage during 1 minute by checking that the
pressure gauge reading doesn’t fall by more than 10 bar.
5. With cylinder valve closed the system may be depressurized by carefully
depressing the red switch button.
6. Read off the gauge when audible alarm sounds. The pressure should be
minimum 30 bars (European Standard EN 137).
7. Switch off positive pressure by pressing the red switch button.
Before Donning:

1. Check that the shoulder straps are pulled back & waist strap buckles are
adjusted outwards.
2. Don the apparatus with cylinder valve facing downwards. Grip the free
ends of the shoulder straps and pull down until the back plate fits
comfortably.
3. Close & adjust the waist belt.
4. Push the red button on the breathing valve to ensure that the positive
pressure is off.
5. Open the cylinder valve completely; an audible alarm will sound until the
pressure reaches a level over the predetermined setting of the whistle.
6. Put the face mask by tightening the head harness. Tighten the forehead
buckle last.
7. Inhale by taking a short breath to switch on positive pressure.

During Use:

1. Check the pressure gauge from time to time whilst using the apparatus,
when approx 30 bar remains in the cylinder the audible alarm will start to
sound.
2. Correct planning of any operation involving the use of breathing apparatus
is essential.

After Use:

1. Remove the face mask by loosening the lowest head harness straps. First
switch off the positive pressure by depressing the red switch button and
then remove the mask at the same time.
2. Push opening button of waist belt buckle from body side towards front the
buckle opens.
3. Close cylinder valve of apparatus, activate flushing mode of lung governed
demand valve until air is released.
