Kindergarten Science: Animal Categorization

This document provides a lesson plan for a kindergarten science lesson on animals. The lesson uses Microsoft PowerPoint to show students a video about animals to introduce the topic. Students will then color animal pictures and cut them out to hold up when asked. The class will be divided into groups, each assigned an animal category, and the students will match stickers to their category. At the end, each group will share their category and matched stickers. The lesson aims to teach students to categorize and identify similarities and differences between animals through interactive group work and activities.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will begin the lesson with the PowerPoint video. The teacher will
introduce the material with “I can identify various animals”. The teacher will provide the students with
animals that they can color on a coloring sheet, and then they will cut them out. The teacher will ask the
students to hold up the picture of a dog, then a horse, etc.

The teacher will divide the students into groups, give each group a category of various animals. The teacher
will direct the students to look at various stickers and pick out the correct stickers that go with each category.
Each group will share the category that they were given and show the stickers that they placed with their
category.
Reflective Practice: This lesson idea can ensure that students are gaining the skills of categorizing and
determining differences in various animals. The students will be engaged in group work and interactive
activities. To extend the lesson, the teacher can begin a lesson on categorizing living things with non-living
things, or living things between mammals, reptiles, etc.
