Flexible Pavement Design Using IRC 37-2012

This document summarizes the design of a flexible pavement for a given traffic and subgrade condition using IRC 37:2012 and IIT PAVE software. Based on a traffic of 20 MSA and CBR of 5%, the recommended pavement section consists of 40mm thick bituminous concrete, 100mm thick dense bituminous macadam, 250mm thick granular sub-base and 300mm thick granular base. Analysis of the pavement using IRC 37:2012 equations and IIT PAVE software found the tensile strain and vertical strain to be within permissible limits, confirming the designed pavement section is safe.

Design of Flexible Pavement Using IRC 37:2012 and IIT PAVE

1 Data Available
Traffic = 20 Msa
Subgrade CBR = 5%

Based on the Traffic and CBR the Trial Section would be as per Plate 3
BC = 40 mm
DBM = 100 mm
G.Base = 250 mm
GSB = 300 mm

2 Resilient Modulus of Sub grade soil (Eq 5.2 of IRC:37-2012)

MR = 10× CBR (For CBR=5)
17.6×(CBR)0.64 (For CBR>5)
As CBR is 5 % hence MR = 10*5
= 50.000 Mpa
3 Composite Resilient Modulus of of the Grannular subbase and the base
(When Subbase and Base layer are made up of Unbound grannular layers)
(Eq 7.3 of IRC:37-2012)
MR_grannular = 0.2×h0.45×MRSubgrade
= 0.2×((250+300)^0.45)×(50)
= 171.066 Mpa

4 Grade of Bitumen to be used = VG 30

(Clause 6.2.2 Fatigue model)

5 Resilient Modulus of Bituminous mixes

(Table 7.1: Ressilient Modulus of Bituminous mixes)
MR_bituminous layer = 1700 Mpa
(BC and DBM for VG 30 grade at 35°C)

6 Reliablity 80%

7 Allowable Horizontal Tensile Strain (From Eq 6.1/6.2 of IRC:37-2012: Fatigue Model)

3.89 0.854
Nf = 2.21×10-4× [1/ɛt] × [1/MR]
(For 80% Reliability)
3.89 0.854
0.711×10-4× [1/ɛt] × [1/MR]
(For 90% Reliability)
Here Nf = 20 Msa
MR = 1700 Mpa
and using 80% Reliability equation
ɛt = 2.980E-04

8 Allowable Vertical Strain in Subgrade (Eq 6.4/6.5 of IRC:37-2012: Rutting Model)

N = 4.1656×10-8×(1/ɛv)4.5337
(For 80% Reliability)
1.41*10-8*(1/ɛv)4.5337
(For 90% Reliability)
Here N = 20 Msa
and using 80% Reliability equation
ɛv = 5.777E-04
For Reults from IITPAVE
Input for IIT Pave
1 Number of layers 3
(Pavement is a 3 layer System)
2 Elastic Modulus and Poisson's Ratio of each layer
i. Modulus of Bituminous Layer/Resilient Modulus of Bituminous 1700 Mpa
mixes
Poisson's Ratio of the Bituminous layer (Cl: 7.4.2) 0.35
Thickness = 40+100 = 140 mm

ii. Modulus of Grannular Layer/Composite Resilient Modulus of of 171.066 Mpa

the Grannular subbase and the base
Poisson's Ratio of the Grannular layer (Cl.7.3.1) 0.35
Thickness = 250+300 = 550 mm

iii. Subgrade Modulus / Resilient modulus of Subgrade 50.000 Mpa

Poisson's Ratio of the subgrade (Annex-VIII) 0.35

3 Wheel Load 20500 N

4 Tyre Pressure (Cl 13. vii) 0.56 Mpa

5 Analysis Points 2
Point 1 Depth 140 mm
Radius 0 mm
Point 2 Depth 140 mm
Radius 155 mm
Point 4 Depth 690 mm
Radius 0 mm
Point 2 Depth 690 mm
Radius 155 mm

6 Dual Wheel load

Results from IIT PAVE (Enclosed at Annexure)

ɛt = 2.856E-04 < 2.980E-04
(i.e. within Permissible Limit)
ɛv = 3.577E-04 < 5.777E-04
(i.e. within Permissible Limit)
Hence the road crust considered is safe.
