After the outside play time teacher sings a song related to animals to call children for the activity.
When all children come next to the teacher, she sits on the grass and asks children to sit across her
in U shape to make all of them see her better. She asks children if they can see anything which
looks like a shelter for animals around them. They discuss shelters and animals for a while. Then
she shows the book to children. She asks them to look at its pictures and remember the song. She
gives enough time for children to observe and asks what this book can tell us about. After
gathering answers, she gives information about the book. She says that it is related to shelters of
animals and she tells about the author and illustrator of the book. The teacher will read the book
by using story cards technique and show the pictures to all children while reading the book. The
name of the book is Hayvan Yuvaları (Details of the book shared in “Books” page of Weebly). The
shelters mentioned in the story are trees, shells and caves. After reading the book by using story
card technique, she opens the Popplet website in order to visualize the groups and subgroups of
animals and animal shelters for children. Then she discusses with the children about the visuals.
Afterwards, teacher sings a rhyme to call next part of the activity. Teacher asks them to take
papers from the bag and get in groups including 4 children according to colours. Teacher gives
enough clay for each group and asks them to create their own animals and determine its features
as a group. She says that they should think about the book that she read for them while creating
animals (What kinds of animals live in what kinds of places). She also tells children that they can
also use materials that they can find around like branches, leaves and rocks to make their own
animals. She gives enough time for them to create their animals and she creates one for herself,
too. When they are done, children create a circle. Teacher gives time children to express their own
animal and its features. Then she explains hers, too. Then she says: “We created our own animals.
However, as we said while reading the book they need a shelter like all creatures. Let’s create a
shelter for all these animals. You will work in the same groups and you can use natural materials
you can find on the ground like leaves, rocks, cones…etc.”. After this explanation child start to
create shelters for animals. When they are done, all groups present their own shelters. After
presentation part, teacher and children sit on the grass and start assessment. After that teacher
takes children’s works to exhibit in the class.

Homework (optional) “Today we did an activity related to shelters of
animals. We read a book called “Hayvan Yuvaları”
and discussed about this book and animal shelters.
Then children created their own animals and
explained features of their animals. According to
these features and the book, they created suitable
shelters for their animals and presented them. We
will go on learning about shelters throughout the

learning by examining the animal shelters (like trees,
rocks…etc) near your house. Please draw a picture
related to your examination with your child and
send it to me by putting it in your child’s notebook.”
