Reflection Essay
Reflecting on the materials that the members and I have designed in Assignment 1, albeit
deemed appropriate is still lacking in certain aspect. Hence, in this paper, I will be focusing on
the suitability of materials developed for teaching purposes in relation to the first assignment
of which appeal to me or otherwise. Also, I will be presenting my review and critical analysis
of the selected suitability of materials developed based on my own perspectives. In regard to
the previous assignment that I have completed, the teaching aids that the members and I have
designed include a PowerPoint Presentation slides, note template, two handouts, situation
cards, and direction cards. These materials were designed to help our client to learn and may
consider as learning resources. As a material developer, I personally believe that the quality
and accessibility to these resources are equally important to support my client in achieving the
expected learning outcomes.
To begin with, the first material chosen to assist the teaching and learning process
during the presentation stage is a PowerPoint presentation slides which consists of a list of
preposition of place. In this case, a PowerPoint presentation slide was used to facilitate the
material presentation and is designed to default good presentation criteria as it can improve
the clarity and arrangement of the presentation. In addition, the slides that we have created are
interactive as it caters to our client special needs. The utilisation of this program is also
beneficial in the sense that the icons used are very simple and similar with those in the
Microsoft Word. In a way, PowerPoint presentation could also be used as visual aids which
can improve the client’s learning motivation and encourage interaction between the instructor
and the client. Despite the many numbers of advantages that it has, PowerPoint presentation
slides may sometimes does not work as expected. Besides, file corruption caused by magnetic
or physical damage so that the presentation will not run may occur. The solution here is to
have alternative activities and CD (compact disk) which is unaffected by magnetic field can
be used.
Next, the second material that we have designed is a Note Template which consists of
a table of preposition of place. Prior to the note given, the client will have to fill in the note
template with the preposition of place that they are familiar with and leave those that they
rarely or do not know how to use. From there, the instructor will provide examples on how to
correctly use the prepositions that they are unfamiliar with. In this case, the note is given to
help client to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Apart from that, this note serves as
guidance for the client to follow the lecture delivery and help them to focus on the flow of the
lesson rather than copying down everything written or being said by the instructor. With the
availability of the internet, this note template can be made available online for the client to
download, print and bring to the class. I personally think that it would be best if the client can
make use of the note template if they are available at least the night before the class.
The third and fourth materials are of the same as both are in the form of handouts. The
first handout contains a map and three direction cards and it will be given during the practice
stage. In this particular stage, the client will have to listen to the directions given and later will
be required to locate the place in the map. In regard to this activity, I believed that the use of
map as a visual stimulus provides client with strong images to help visualise the preposition.
On the other hand, the fourth material which will be used during the production stage contains
a map and three situation cards. In this activity, the client will have to read and understand the
situation cards. Then, the client will have to provide the directions using the preposition of
place verbally. The purpose of the activity conducted is to help client to practice giving
directions to places by using correct preposition. In my opinion, one aspect that is lacking in
both handouts is the limitation to the exercises given.
Lastly, the material that we have developed for the closure is a checklist. This
checklist will be used to record the client’s performance which helps to assess the client’s
accomplishment on that day. Aside from that, the used of checklist in this lesson is meant to
help client feel in control and hold her accountable by removing obstacles to success such as
“I didn’t know what is this,” or “I’ve heard of this but I didn’t know how to use this word.”
As a whole, the materials developed are believe to cater to my client’s needs and suits the
level of her proficiency. In a way, I believe that despite the disadvantages owned by each
material designed, it will eventually work and help to communicate the details or goals of this
course to the sponsor. In regard to the client, I believe that the used of these materials are very
necessary for effective teaching. To conclude, I would like to reiterate that the materials
developed are large enough to be seen by the client, meaningful as they stand to serve their
purpose and up to date in every aspect.
