Irradiation in Cold Storage

1. Regular cold storage is most widely used for Onions and Potatoes in India as it is the largest
producer of onions in the world with 92% private sector participation.
2. Over 50,000 crores INR of annual losses in wastage of fruits, vegetables, fish, meat and
dairy products.
3. Top three states in terms of cold storage capacity are UP, West Bengal and Punjab. 75% of
these storage plants supports single commodity (primarily potato) and only 25% are multi
commodity.
4. Focus is shifting towards more sophisticated machinery, multipurpose storage plants rather
than single commodity, ripening facilities, modern packaging and energy efficient technology.

6. Under Income Tax Act 1961, deduction @150% permitted for expenditure on capital
investment. Concessional rate of custom duty @5% on imported machinery and equipment.
7. Government of India through MoFPI is putting up 42 mega food parks. The parks have
around 1200 developed plots (approximately 1 acre each) with basic infrastructure enabled,
the entrepreneurs can lease for the setting up food processing units. Out of these food parks,
Murshidabad has 46 acres in progress.
