N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form
Your Name: Carolina Ley Date of Activity: 02/10/2018 Faculty name: Colleen Green
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with
(be specific about the purpose and your role):
The activity was held at an assisted living facility in which I got the opportunity to
collaborate with other students in healthcare profession such as nutrition, medicine, pharmacy,
and speech. During this time, we performed hearing screens on some of the residents in the
facility and determined their follow-up needs. During the screening process, several questions
were asked regarding the resident’s perception of hearing loss and its affects their ability to
interact with others. The second part of the screen was to conduct an exam with otoscope,
identify the structures that help with sound conduction and interpretation, and identify cerumen
buildup and make proper recommendations. The last component of the screen to determine the
client’s ability to hear sounds at different frequencies. My role in this learning experience was to
learn how to collaborate with other healthcare professionals and further develop my nursing
skills using the nursing process.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The interprofessional activity was help at St. Luke’s Home, an assisted living facility for
individuals over the age of 55 who have limited finances. The duration of this activity as just
over four hours. To start, the anatomy and physiology of the ear were described in an
introduction lecture. Moreover, proper techniques for using equipment and communicating
effectively with individuals who are hard of hearing were discussed to apply them as we
interacted with the residents. The remainder of activity focused on client assessments and a
debriefing session at the end.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
Being able to interact with other students from different disciplines is especially valuable
to me because as a future nurse, collaboration with other healthcare professionals is essential to
provide quality patient care. Not only did this teach me about the role others play in the care of
patients, but also how their way of thinking and approach makes a difference in caring for others.
This interprofessional activity was a great opportunity as it allowed us to care for patients while
learning about other professions and how to communicate effectively with them.
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why
or why not? (Describe)
Personally, I believe this activity should be something that every student going into the
healthcare field should experience at least once. It allows you to get a feel for what it is like to
collaborate with other disciplines and realize the impact good communication has on patient
outcomes. I would definitely recommend this activity to other students as you learn so much
from others and how to think from different perspectives.
