West Greene High School
Instructor: J.D. Brickey, “Profe” Term: Spring 2018 Course: Spanish II
Email:
[email protected]¡Bienvenidos a Español II! The objective of this course is for students to enjoy learning the
Spanish language in practical communication by listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The
students will understand vocabulary and grammar appropriate to their level of study. They will
also learn about different Spanish speaking countries and their customs.
Classroom Norms and Expectations:
1. Follow ALL school rules as noted in the school handbook.
2. Treat classmates and me with respect. This includes being respectful with words and actions.
Be respectful of each other’s belongings and personal space.
3. Be on time. Punctuality is an important quality to learn. If you know you are going to be late or
miss a class, let me know as soon as possible.
4. Be prepared for class. This means having all assignments completed and all needed materials
with you every day.
5. Remain seated until dismissal. Do not get out of your seat until the bell rings. Do not start
packing up your stuff until work is completed and instructional time is over.
Classroom Procedures:
1. ENTERING CLASSROOM: As students enter the classroom, they should place their belongings
at the side of the room. Students will gather needed materials and sit in their ASSIGNED seat
ready to start class. As SOON as the bell rings, students should begin working quietly on the bell
ringer and wait for my instructions. Any student who is not in their assigned seat when class
starts will receive a lunch detention.
2. TARDINESS: If a student is tardy to class, he/she MUST sign in on the tardy log next to the
door. Three (3) tardies will equal ONE (1) absence.
3. BELL RINGER: We will have a bell ringer activity that students are to complete as soon as the
bell rings. We will spend the first few minutes in class working on this bell ringer. I will collect the
bell ringers at the end of each week for a grade.
4. HOMEWORK: If students were assigned homework the night before, they should pass their
homework up to the row leader (the student at the front of the row) when instructed to do so. I
will collect the homework while students are completing the bell ringer. If students do not pass
up homework at this time, I will NOT accept it.
5. QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: If students have questions or comments, they MUST raise their
hand and wait to be called on. Students who shout out without raising their hand will receive a
verbal warning. If a student repeats the offense, he/she will receive a lunch detention or be sent
to the principal’s office. Students must show respect when asking a question or making a
comment.
6. PROFANITY: There will be NO foul language or cussing in the classroom. Students will receive
a verbal warning for the first offense. For the consecutive offense, students will be given a lunch
detention or sent to the principal’s office.
7. MAKE-UP WORK: If a student missed a quiz or test, the student must consult with me to
schedule a time during Enrichment or after school to complete the missed quiz/test. If the
student missed a homework assignment, project, or any other assignment, he/she must also
consult with me about making it up. Students have the number of days missed, PLUS ONE to
make up the missed work (i.e.- 3 days missed, you have 4 days to make up the work). However, if
the student was in class the day the assignment was given, he/she MUST turn it in the DAY
HE/SHE RETURNS TO CLASS. It is your responsibility to consult with me about missed work.
8. LEAVING CLASS: If at all possible, please refrain from leaving class. However, if a student
must leave class, he/she must first ask me. If I allow a student to leave, he/she must sign IN AND
OUT on the “Sign-out” sheet next to the door and also carry the school handbook.
9. CELL PHONES: Cell phones will not be allowed to be out in my classroom. Do NOT have cell
phones out or they will be confiscated until the end of the day. There will be some classroom
activities in which I will allow students to use cell phones, but ONLY under my discretion.
Grade Determination
I will not be calculating 9 weeks grades with percentages. Instead I am using a total points
system. Each assignment, quiz, test, project, etc. will be worth a specific amount of points. The
grade for each 9 weeks will be calculated as follows:
amount of points earned
X 100 = 9 weeks grade
amount of points possible
The final course grade will be determined as follows: 10% Midterm 10% Final
40% First 9 weeks
40% Second 9 weeks
Grading Scale:
A (93-100) B (85-92) C (77-84) D (70-76) F (<69)
Daily Work/Participation Grade
Each student will receive a participation grade for speaking/answering in Spanish, having his/her
homework, talking at appropriate times, completing bell ringers, and staying on task.
Materials:
We will use a classroom set of textbooks. Please make sure you have a notebook or a 3 ring
binder with notebook paper, a sharpened pencil or pen, and if you would like, a Spanish-English
dictionary.
*ANY ITEMS SUCH AS TISSUES, HAND SANITIZER, CLOROX WIPES, PENS (Papermate Inkjoy
Color Pens), PENCILS, POST-IT NOTES, DRY ERASE MARKERS, WHITE-OUT TAPE, STAPLES,
OR ANY TYPE OF CLASSROOM SUPPLIES WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. :) I WILL GIVE
STUDENTS BONUS POINTS OR HOMEWORK PASSES FOR ITEMS BROUGHT.
Bonus Points
Students will have opportunities throughout the semester to earn bonus points through games
and classroom activities. Students can also receive 10 bonus points per chapter by completing
note cards of the chapter vocabulary. Students must turn these note cards in BEFORE the
chapter test/project. Bonus points can be used on any assignments, tests, quizzes, etc. EXCEPT
the midterm and final.
Disciplinary Actions:
Depending on the severity of the issue, the following disciplinary actions will be taken to
remediate the problem: in-class seclusion (sitting at a separate desk), lunch detentions, parental
contact, write-ups, before/after school detentions, and office visits to Mr. Tunnell or Mrs.
Scarlett.
Retakes
Except for the midterm and final, students are allowed ONE (1) retake each of all quizzes and
tests. I will accept the better grade of the two attempts. This is my form of extra credit. There will
be NO extra credit opportunities except for retakes and bonus points. Students must stay for
after school tutoring to complete retakes.
Parent Letter
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I strive to make learning another language both interesting and fun. Being able to speak
another language is beneficial both professionally and personally. Learning another language can
seem like a daunting task, but with the right methods and resources, it can be a great way to
expand one’s knowledge of the world and other cultures.
I hope you have taken the time to review the syllabus with all of this course’s policies and
procedures. Please sign this form and fill out your contact information below. I can email you with
updates on what’s going on in the classroom as well as your child’s progress in the course. E-mail
is the best way to get in contact with me, but I will certainly set-up a phone call or meeting if
there is ever a need to do so.
I want nothing but the best for your child. I want your child to succeed in all of his/her
endeavors and I will strive to do my best in making sure that happens. Feel free to contact me
with any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to a great year!
Un saludo,
J.D. Brickey, “Profe”
