Minor or electives or cluster minor: Outdoor rec/Leadership Management.

Semester and year you declared this major: Fall semester 2017

Anticipated Graduation date: May 2019

Content Development: Answer the following question as thoughtfully from your current
perspective.

1. What do you see as your current strengths as an Outdoor Recreation Leadership and
Management (OLRM) major?

- I have a lot of experience in the outdoors from my own personal ventures of rock
climbing, backpacking, backpacking, and canoe camping over the years. I’ve also
guided for the past couple of summers in the Appalachian mountains, outerbanks,
and a lot of northern Michigan. I think my strengths lie within pushing myself
physically and remaining calm and stoic in tough situations within the natural
world.

2. What do you see as your current challenges (weakness) as an OLRM major?

- I believe that my weaknesses lie in connecting and teaching with younger

individuals. It’s easier for me to relate to older clients rather than children. I think
I need to work on my patience and preparedness to help students that may not be
as athletically inclined and not as enthused about the outdoors initially.
- As well as that, I believe that I need to learn to be a lot more organized rather than
continuously adhere to my own spontaneous nature.

3. What will you do in the future to improve OLRM skills?

- In the future, I want to start setting more goals and putting in long term plans of
action to achieve them.

4. In what OLRM areas would you most like to improve?

- I would most like to improve my overall knowledge base in expedition planning

and organization that would coincide with such plans.
- On top of that, I want to work on overcoming my own anxieties involved with
teaching and responsibility.

5. A. Identify what you believe to be your present competency level in each of the following
academic skills: Rate yourself on a scale of 1 – 10; 1 being week 10 being strong. Then list
examples.

Outdoor Skills (technical skills sets evolving aspects of adventure activities)

- 7 out of 10. I pick most skills up fairly easily and put a lot of time into adventure
activities in my free time. Examples: backpacking, climbing, rope rigging, etc.

Human Skills (the ability to work with others as a leader/ group member /communicator)

- 5 out 10. I believe I work well with the right group of people. When there is
opposition, I tend to be more observant rather than hands on, though, which I
think could be detrimental in some cases.

Educational Skills (the ability to teach, facilitate, and motivate others increasing their
knowledge base in OLRM related topics)

- 5 out of 10. I feel as though I possess the necessary knowledge to teach, however,
many times I find it hard to adapt my teaching style to different age groups.

5. Analogical (ability to discern similarities in some respects between things otherwise

unlike): 8

6. Metaphorical (ability to compare using a word or phrase associated with one thing to

apply to another - e.g. "all the world's a stage"): 8

7. Creative thinking: 7

8. The ability to speak with reasonable proficiency in or about the discipline: 6

9. The ability to read with reasonable proficiency in or about the discipline: 9

10. The ability to write with reasonable proficiency in or about the discipline: 9
