HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION TUTORIAL
Week 1 TUTORIAL 1
In this lab session you are going to perform some research works that
would help you in understanding the concept of HCI.
Write a small essay (min 500 words) to explain what HCI is and
anything that you can find about it from your research.
You are to write the essay in a formal way, adhering to the academic
writing style discussed during your academic briefing. Please refer to
the library’s website for guidance on Harvard’s Referencing. The
Academic Writing slides attached should give you some examples of the
correct use of citations and references

You are in the year 2388
You are required to design a vending system that a traveler who is at
an airport can use to obtain drinks and snacks. Your team is required to
identify the specific product, the machine and how it is to be used
In your design, include drawings that would show how the machine
would look like, and how it is expected to be operated.
Each group will present the work to the class
Week 2 TUTORIAL 1
Work as a team, capture 8 images/pictures of badly designed product
from your surrounding.
The work has to be original, no pinching from web
sites/books/magazines.
Your team is required to identify what are the products’ bad design
elements and be able to present them to the class. If possible, suggest
how the bad designs can be improved
If you do not have the tools (camera) to capture the pictures, you may
sketch them.
Each group will present the work to the class.

In a group, design an information kiosk for APIIT.
You are to demonstrate a good use of metaphors and the design, based
on what has been covered in this week’s lecture. At the end of the
session each student is to present the design and explain the rationale
of each metaphor used.
Week 4 TUTORIAL 1
Consider what kind(s) of data gathering would be
appropriate for the following, explain and justify the
reasons for your choice(s):
1. You are developing a leave application system for an educational
institution. Currently there is no automated system for this process.
2. You are developing a Malaysia tourism website
3. The HCI project you are currently working on
4. You are developing an information kiosk for a shopping mall
5. You are developing an online tax system for the public to lodge their
tax statement for the Taxation Office

Choose a product you wish to design analyzing the results, identifying
the lessons learnt from the whole process
Prepare a questionnaire for the user profiling purpose
Identify the justification as to why each question is asked in the data
gathering activity
Once completed get your colleague to answer the questions
Prepare a documentation to discuss the activity, critically

Week 5 TUTORIAL 1
Evaluate 3 existing website(s) or systems based on the design
principles
At the end of the session, present the website and demonstrate the
elements that represent the design principles as discussed during the
lecture.
TUTORIAL 2
Look around you, look into your bag, purse, pencil case : Choose 5
objects (they can be any handheld devices, pencil, chair, doors etc)
Examine how they have been designed

Relate the designs of these objects to the design principles
Week 6 TUTORIAL 3
Based on our discussions on human factors and design principles, you
are to work in a team to come up with a plan for an interface design for
an online library system of a public library.
Discuss the requirement of such system, looking at the type of users
who are going to use the system and the constraints they may have.
Identify the suitable design principles to be included in the design.
Sketch in detail the storyboard to demonstrate the system and its
interface. (May contain a number of pages to represent different
functionalities of the system)
Week 7 - 12 Activities
In the tutorial sessions from week 7 – week 12, students should
work on the assignment in the group. Students may show the
results of their discussions or the outcomes of their usability
engineering tasks to the tutor for comments/guidance.
Assignment: User Profiling
Discuss with your lecturer on the data gathering activities in
establishing user requirements for your HCIU project.
Prepare a questionnaire for the user profiling purpose (or other
types of questions list for your chosen data gathering methods)
Perform a pilot questionnaire/interview/observation etc. on your
peers.
Prepare a short documentation to discuss the activity, critically
analyzing the results, identifying the lessons learnt from the
whole process
Assignment: Task Analysis
Perform a task analysis using HTA for the product you are
designing
Assignment: Usability Goals
Identify (with justification) the usability goals for your HCI
project.
Discuss with team on the types on elements/objects to be
included in the design in order to reflect the chosen usability
goals.

Prepare a short documentation to discuss the activity, critically
analyzing the results, identifying the lessons learnt from the
whole process

Week 13 - 14 In the tutorial sessions from week 13 – week 14, the lecturers will be
conducting revision and the students will also be presenting their group
assignment. The lecturer will schedule the presentation and inform the
students of the arrangement
