Importance of Gender Neutral Washrooms

Gender-neutral washrooms provide an inclusive space for people of all gender identities to use the restroom safely and comfortably. They benefit transgender, genderqueer, gender non-conforming individuals as well as families and people with disabilities or of other ages. Approximately 9 million Americans identify as LGBT and nearly 700,000 as transgender. However, 70% of transgender individuals report experiencing harassment or discrimination when using public restrooms corresponding to their gender identity rather than their sex assigned at birth. The establishment of gender-neutral washrooms aims to eliminate such discrimination by allowing people to use the facility that matches their gender identity and expression.
