Algebra Trinomial Factoring Guide

This document provides guided notes on factoring trinomials. It begins with learning objectives related to factoring trinomials with different leading coefficients. Examples are then provided to define prime and composite numbers, find prime factorizations, and greatest common factors (GCF). The document continues with examples of using the zero product property to solve equations by factoring. Finally, examples are given to factor trinomials with leading coefficients of 1 and other than 1.

Factoring Trinomials Guided Notes

Learning Objectives:

• I CAN, factor trinomials with a leading coefficient 1.
• I CAN, factor trinomials with a common factor.
• I CAN, factor trinomials with a leading coefficient other than 1.
• I CAN, find the zeros of a function by factoring.

Define the following, based on your prior knowledge:

Prime Number:

Composite Number:

Prime Factorization:

GCF:

Example 1: Classify the number as prime or composite.

a.) 36

b.) 23

c.) 22

d.)31

Example 2: Find the prime factorization of 90

Example 3: Find the prime factorization of -140

Example 5: Find the GCF

a) 15 and 16

b) 36𝑥 $ 𝑦 and 54𝑥𝑦 $ 𝑧

c) 27𝑎$ 𝑏 and 15𝑎𝑏 $ 𝑐

Example 2: Factor GCF

10𝑎0 𝑏 $ + 15𝑎$ 𝑏 − 5𝑎𝑏 0

Zero Product property: if ab=0 ab=0 , then either a=0 or b=0
a=0  or  b=0 (or both). A product of factors is zero if and only if one or
more of the factors is zero.

Solve by factoring the GCF and applying Zero Product property:

Example 1: 𝟗𝒙𝟐 + 𝒙 = 𝟎

Example 2: 𝒙𝟐 = 𝟕𝒙

Example 3: (d - 5)(3d - 4) = 0

Multiply = Put Together

(x +4)(x – 3)

= 𝑥 $ − 3𝑥 + 4𝑥 − 12
= 𝑥 $ + 𝑥 − 12

Factor = Take apart!
