Common Core Learning Standard SL.4.1/SL.5.1: Engage effectively in a range
Addressed: of collaborative discussions with diverse
partners on grade 4/5 topics and texts,
building on others’ ideas and expressing their
own clearly.
Learning Targets: Students will be learn about the presidents
and be able to describe what it takes to be
president, and what they do. Students will
form a campaign within their desk mates, and
be able to run against other tables to see the
work that goes into presidency.
Relevance/Rationale: Students will be able to have some sort of
knowledge of what goes through campaigning
and leadership. They will be able to use this
in the future as growth of a leader and have an
understanding of the power and government
that leads their country.
Formative Assessment Criteria for My students and I will know they have
Success: successfully understood the criteria when they
are able to describe what and how it to takes
and to be president, have a well presented
campaign, work together well, and elect one
of their classmates as president.
Activities/Tasks: For a whole week, students will select one of
their tablemates to run for president. They
will create a campaign (slogan, poster, write
small speech). After the week, the tables
elected candidate will run for president, and
as a whole class choose who will become
class president. Students will be able to take
what they have learned about the presidential
ways and apply it to their campaign in a fun,
inventive way.
Resources/Materials: For this lesson, I will provide students with
pencils, crayons, color pencils, markers,
paper, poster board, tape, glue, stickers,
pictures, printer, computer, and scissors.
(Whomever wins president will when a small
American flag stick and a badge to wear for
the rest of the day in class.)
Access for All: All students will have to take part in creating
something for the campaign. All will have to
contribute ideas, research, help with slogan,
and campaign speech. The whole table with
present alongside elected candidate. As a
teacher, I will walk around and engage with
each group and make sure everyone is
included and is partaking in some way.
Modifications/Accommodations: For students with disabilities, I will make sure
to spend extra time in the group to help the
student if needed any. Whether it be with
spelling, pronouncing words, research,
creating, or reading anything. I would make
sure their groupmates include him/her as
much as they would with everyone and had
some of contribution to the project.
