It's wise to lot the glue dry before completing the quite complex assemblies like the red-eyed ‘Shora’ devices on the front of turret DON'T MELT IT! All parts went together nicely; there were locating pins everywhere ensuring that components could be glued only in one way. The only problem that I had with the turret was in step fifteen, where I managed to melt a tiny, semi Extra Thin Cement! This ‘meant that I had som problems when attaching the AA machine gun traversing system, so don't make this same mistake, ‘The multiple smoke- grenade launchers suffer from quite heavy mould seams and I found them tricky to clean up. The same issue was experienced with the turret-front extr armour where there's a ‘moulding seam between two ‘small bolt-heads. ‘The turret was completed with the main gun barrel and the ERA (explosive reactive armour) tiles on the roof. The antenna is presented in full-length ut upper part's profile ‘was square, not circular. It cean be replaced with a new antenna made of fine tubing fand steel-wire using the kit's fantenna base. Building the hull i straightforward; just follow the instructions. I managed to shave off some rivets! small bolt-heads when ‘cutting the upper-hull from the sprue, so I decided to shave them all off and replace them with new ones made with my punch and die set T decided to complete the running gear and also paint itbefore I attached the hull halves together. The link- and-length tracks are nicely produced and their hollow ‘guide-teeth are moulded in rows, so there is no tedious iluing tooth-by-tooth, The idler wheel is adjustable so you can fit the tracks perfectly around wheels. IF you want, you cean replace the plastic mesh with suitable PE mesh. The exhaust system differs from that of the 72; on the 7.00 there's an adjusting rod for closing the exhaust tube, Dut kit doesn't inelude it. It's quite easy to make if, na want, but you'll need some roference pictures to understand its construction, PAINTING After a careful cleaning with diluted washing-up liquid and rinsing with warm water, Ilet the model dry overnight. I masked all the pre-painted clear parts with Gunze's Mr. Masking Sol and then primed the whole vehicle with Vallejo's Grey Primer. T wanted to paint my 7-90 in three-tone camouflage, using the instructions as a painting guide. For ‘Russian modern green’ I used Tamiya XF-67 NATO Green, lightened with some XFt Yellow Green, For the sand colour used XF-57 Bulf lightened with some XF-2 Flat White. The sand-colour was airbrushed with soft edges, trying to avoid overspray. After the ‘sand-colour was applied, Tairbrushed the black pattorns as per instructions {ATO Black, painted the convoy lights Color range. I painted the roadwheols with a very dark grey paint mixture and then used Quickwheel’s mask (for ‘Tamiya's T-72) and painted, the wheels green. I painted rack’s inner faces with ame dark gre ced the road contact aren and airbrushed Vallojo's Gunmetal on them. The decals for the vehicle numbers were applied over semi-gloss varnished areas using Micro Set and and then I varnished whole model at semi-gloss stage. ‘The paintwork was done. That was ‘my initial reaction when I opened the box for the first time, Revell looks to be ‘keeping pace with the rest of the manufacturers in the proliferation of 1:32 aireraft fand this famous German ‘medium bomber makes an interesting subject this time. In the box comes with over 400 parts moulded in light grey all nicely bagged and protected. Decals for three different Revell’s bombers in 1:72 I was anxious to give the larger seale kkita try; so here we go! ‘The first thing you have to deal with is the 100+ page instruction sheet, which can, bea little confusing at times so just make sure you study it as you go along, Another small ‘matter to deal with is the parts fon the sprue trees; it seems that they are not numbered in any particular order, s0 you have to play a hunting game for your part. Enough with that, how let's build, GETTING STARTED We start with the cockpit which has a good level of detail in it. The seat has ‘moulded-in seatbelts which T ground off and then added fa nice photo-etch set from Eduard. This makes a big difference because they are clearly visible under all that glass. With the control column, rudder pedals and various other details in place I proceeded to paint the cockpit RLMG6 and give it ‘a black wash and drybrush to bring out the details Decals are provided for the instrument faces, ‘Stops thirteen to twenty are for the fuselage interior, lots of detail here too with various radios and ammo Fucks, Just remember to fill the prominent sink holes. When all painted and detailed it looks very good. Stops thirty-soven to forty- ‘two have you building the engine nacelles. Pay close attention to the instructions, ‘mark your parts, dry fit and you'll be okay. A small problem was experienced where the lower radiators fit to the bottom of the engine nacelles; a small amount of filler was needed here, ‘The engine exhausts are hollow but I still decided to thin them out some more with a motor-tool. The wings fare constructed in three Sections, the inner section with nicely detailed wheels wells and those unusual vertical bomb racks. The two outer wing panels have poseable flaps and ailerons if you so desire, T necded some filler to fill a small gap when Tattached the outer wing els to the centre section, With the outer wing panels attached I proceeded with the landing gear. They look spindly and complex but when done are quite strong. ‘The wings attached to the fuselage perfectly, no © ‘TMM! 199 May 2012 15, PULL DOL Ds NAN URCRAFT REVELL 1:32 HEINKEL HE111P-1 @ KIT NO.04696 © Giller needed, although I did remove the alignment tabs at the inner wing root for a ‘The tuelage interior better fit structure, painted ‘The rest of the assembly oe was straight forward and the overall ft ofthe parts ‘Now was the time for the dreaded masking of all those windows and cockpit glazing. Not to worry. Eduard has a nice pre-cut self adhesive set that comes to the rescue and makes life alittle easier so it only took f couple of hours for that tedious task. TIME TO PAINT ‘Now that the construction ‘was finished its time to start the painting. I chose a scheme from the Squadron Signal He-111 in Action book, I liked the ey catching one with the white cowling, rudder and fuselage band, Although I did take some artistic license and added red spinners for a little more colour. Tused a combination of ‘Tamiya and Modelmaster paints sprayed through my Iwata HP-B air brush at about 16-20 PSL T began painting by pre- shading the panel lines with ‘Tamiya flat black first. On such a big model, that took ‘most of one evening build session. It looks messy at first, but with the paint to come, adds a nice touch to the finished look, Tamiya XP-28 Light Blue was sprayed on the underside, building up light coats until the desired effect was achieved. For the top, the standard RLM70/71, 1 used ‘Tamiya X-61 Dark Green, and Mode] Master RLM70. With a splinter scheme I mask, I sprayed each panel with the base colour, building up slowly, and then sprayed lighter shades of teach colour in the panels for faded worn look. Man, that’s a lot of painting for the big model, When T'was satisfied with the coloration, I gave the aireraft a good coat of ‘Future’ Johnson's Klear) getting it ready for decals land wash, The big deca sheet is nice, maybe alittle thick, but laid down wit the micro system just fine. When that was dry like to apply some pastels to simulate streaking and weathering. Also, a Prismacolor silver pencil, sharpened to a fine point, was used to create some chipping around the access panels. I attached the pitot tube and antennae and the big bird was done. Tm not sure how long it took me to build, I lost track of the hours somewhere along the line, but with the general good fit and nice detail, st was a fun kit to put together. The tengine alone took me a fair few days to complete, not because its over-complex oF difficult to build, but because i's so nicely detailed that it merits some fare and attention to make the most of it. [wanted to add ignition leads and fuel lines which any model DPV engine requires as they are very much on show, but as the review kit was an early production sample it didn't come with any hoses/wire to complete these detailing tasks (2 still not cert production kits will come with them). The first job is one of the most tedious I reckon, and that’s sorting out the wheels. ‘Tanks by their nature have a lot of them and these needed to be scuffed up a Dit, A coarse sanding stick and a blunt sealpel blade ‘were used to impart a heavily worn appearance; to go that little bit farther 1 also applied some Humbrol Liquid Poly to soften the surface which made things a bit easier "The huil and turret were slowly built and detailed following the Eduard and Tamiya instructions carefully, Ifind that if you take your time and study the instructions you can save yourself time in the ong run, What I could have done with hindsight is figured out where it was best to drill the holes for the Mig Productions fuel lines earlier, Tleft it © {veal the extent ofthe authors Ag) WH 99 May 2012 33 PULL BUILDS LITARA Wish ‘TAMIYA 1:35 RUSSIAN MEDIUM TANK T-55A @ KIT NO.35275 = ‘The model wit be chipped using the harspray method theretore ‘Sut feally euthertic tok, much beter thar ‘pplying the chips by brush.
