Technology Lesson Plan

Name of lesson: A Toontastic Story in 3 Parts

Grade Level Appropriateness: Kindergarten

Technology Content Standard Addressed:


NETS-S 1.b: “Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology—(b.) Students create original works as a
means of personal or group expression.

Standard: CCSS.ELA-:
W.K.3 - Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several
loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a
reaction to what happened.
W.K.6 - With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and
publish writing, including in collaboration with peers

Objective: Students will:


• Create an original 3 part story (beginning, middle, end) and publish it using Toontastic iPad
app.

Materials needed to facilitate the lesson:


• The Book Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candace Fleming
• Toontastic Storyboard worksheets
• iPads with Toontastic app installed

Suggested Group Size: Whole group for story, small group for iPad work

Procedures:
Set the Stage/Anticipatory Set and Objective
• Show the book Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candace Fleming (Visual) and say,
“Today we are going to see what happens when Mr. McGreely plants a vegetable
garden and the bunnies discover the yummy vegetables. Do any of you have a
vegetable garden? Did you like to munch on the vegetables from the garden?” Brief
discussion of gardens. (Auditory)

State the Objective
• State, “Today we will explore the beginning, middle, and end of a story .” (Auditory)

Investigate Prior Knowledge


• Review the words: beginning, middle, and end (Auditory/Visual)

New Information/Input & Model


• Read aloud Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! to the class. Discuss the major events in the
story.
• Reread the story and have the students identify the most important event in beginning,
middle, and end of the story.
• Show teacher’s 3-part story creation from Toontastic on the classroom projector.
• Review how to use the Toontastic app: teacher will have the app set up with 3 parts of a
story (labeled “setup,” “challenge,” and “Resolution” on the app.)
• Click on the paintbrush on “setup,” then create the setting
• Follow prompt to move on and select the characters for the story.
• Follow prompt to animate your story using the Toontastic Storyboard worksheets the
students will complete.
• Distribute Toontastic Storyboard worksheet to each student. Have them create a 3-part
original story with a beginning, middle, and end. Students can choose a scene and
characters from the Toontastic app on the iPad.
• Students use the Toontastic iPad app to narrate and animate their 3-part story creation.
• Students will export the final project as a movie and share their stories with class on the
classroom projector.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Stories will be assessed using a rubric to determine if they have a beginning, middle, end and
each part is a logical sequence in a complete story.
