Transmission Media & Antenna Exam ECE 42

The document contains two parts describing microwave transmission systems. Part I describes a satellite communication system with a 1.2 GHz signal passing through an antenna, LNA, LNTA, and mixer stages. It provides specifications to calculate attenuation, reflection coefficient, SWR, power transmitted to a 450 ohm load, and reflected power. Part II describes a 15 MHz transmission line with specified properties terminated by a 50+j50 ohm dipole antenna, asking to determine propagation constant, characteristic impedance, reflection coefficient at the load, input impedance seen by the source, and power dissipated in the antenna.

Transmission Media & Antenna System (ECE 42)

Midtermen Exam

Part II

1. (30 pts) Figure shows the first few stages of a microwave receiver intended for space satellite
communication radiating at 1.2 GHz. The receive signal power at the antenna is 20 dBm. The output signal at
Mixer & IF stage is to be feed to a load with an impedance of 450 Ω through a 500 meters 2-wire pair with radius
of 61 mils and assumed to have zero spaced between wires.

antenna

To Load
LNA LNTA Mixer & IF
Te1 = 20°K F2 = 6 dB F3 = 12 dB
G1 = 25 dB G2 = 20 dB G3 = 40 dB
Bw = 5 MHz

Determine the following:

a. Attenuation in db/ft
b. Reflection coefficient
c. SWR
d. Power transmitted to the load
e. Reflected power

2. (30 pts) Consider the figure shown below. A 15 MHz, 100V time harmonic source having a 50 Ω impedance is
connected to a lossless transmission line. The inductance per unit length and capacitance per unit length of the
line are 0.133 µH/m and 0.67 nF/m respectively. The line is terminated with a dipole antenna whose impedance
is 50 + j 50Ω.

Determine:
a. Propagation constant on the transmission line
b. Characteristics impedance of the transmission line
c. Reflection coefficient at the load
d. Input impedance seen by the source
e. Percentage of the time- averaged incident power that is dissipated in the antenna
