The Royal Background of the Palace
on Wheels
On rolling back wheels of time, we find
the rulers of princely states of
Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of
Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British
India travelled by these luxurious
coaches. After independence, these
coaches were parked and remained in
this state for a quarter of a century until
in 1981-82, when the Rajasthan
Tourism Development Corporation and
Indian Railways launched a special
heritage tourist train for providing a
unique memorable experience to the
tourists visiting Rajasthan.
The name Palace on Wheels was
derived from it's royal background of
the coaches. Gradually State govt. and
railway department brought many
infrastructural changes in the coaches
while keeping the same aesthetics of
the interiors alive, matching the
interiors of the royal state. The train
was replaced by the air-conditioned
broad gauges new train, which had 14
saloons, 2 restaurant cum kitchen cars,
one Bar cum Lounge and 4 service
Cars. The cabins of each saloon are
attached with bath and shower. The
train also has a well-appointed lounge,
library and bar.
Its all about Luxury and comfort
That's true! On the Palace on Wheels
your journey is full of exuberance and
luxurious feeling. A perfect chance to
relive the era when kings and queens
ruled, when royalty spelt magic. When

khidmatgars, for your service. Step
aboard for a journey into the past on a
luxury train.

Doctor on call at each station, barber
shop & beauty parlour. The lounge
also has a souvenirs shop 'The Bazaar'
where souvenirs and gift items are sold
bearing the insignia of the POW.
The names of the saloons given are
based on the princely states of
Rajasthan- Jaipur, Jodhpur, Alwar,
Bundi, Kota, Jhalawar, Dungarpur,
Dholpur, Bharatpur, Jaisalmer, Sirohi,
Bikaner, Udaipur and Kishangarh.
The Lavish Interiors
Sit in these beautiful carriages and
look around. You will find that each
saloon highlights the cultural ethos of
the state, represented through the use
of furniture, handicrafts, painting and
furnishings. The ceiling in the lounge is
of particular interest. Each saloon is
different but the overall ambience of
the décor of the saloons has been
taken care of to provide continuity and
harmony.
Each saloon has cream yellow colour
on its exterior walls and bears the Coat
of Arms (logo) of the erstwhile princely
states.
1. ALWAR
Located strategically, Alwar is the
gateway to Rajasthan from Delhi.
With a turbulent history spanning
back to the medieval era, Alwar has
been an important place of trade and
commerce. Bestowed by nature with
a unique habitat comprising forests
and deep valleys, Alwar in home to
several species of flora and fauna.
The ceiling of the Alwar coach lounge
has been done aesthetically in a
delightful mix of cone work and oils
in relief, depicting a hunting scene.
The royal emblem and a miniature
painting adorn the lounge. Subtle
tones of pink enhance the romantic
ambience of the lounge.
2. BHARATPUR
Maharaja Suraj Mal, the valiant Jat
king, who was admired for his
chivalry and courage, had his abode
here. Once a fortified township,
Bharatpur is now an ornithologist's

sanctuary is home to over 376 avian
species. Echoing the vividity of
nature's gift to Bharatpur the relief
work on this coach depicts various
species of birds on the tree of life. A
replica of royal crest of Bharatpur
adorns the valance of the blinds. The
'nature' theme is further endorsed by
the white cedar inlay work depicting
birds and painted peacocks, sitting on
a haveli worked on a mirror. The

beige and aqua green, is a vivid
reminder of lush green forests of
Bharatpur and Ghana

Anup Mahal and Padam Mahal of the
Junagarh fort. The royal state crest is
placed on the valance along with
some handicrafts of Rajasthan. The

Corporation, The Indian Railways, the
Tourism Department of Rajasthan and
the Government of India launched

was derived from the royal background
of the coaches, which were originally
meant to be the personal Railway
coaches of the erstwhile rulers of the
princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat,
the Nizam of Hyderabad and the
Viceroy of British India.
The Legend
These coaches were not being used by
the Indian Railways after
independence in normal passenger
trains on account of very rich and
traditional interiors.
The Palace On Wheels started as a
unique holiday train hauled by a steam
engine with its inaugural trip on 26th
January 1982. It started to roll on its
regular operations from October 1982.
The Legend Conserved
In 1991, a new air-conditioned meter
gauge Palace On Wheels on the lines
of the old heritage train was launched
with 13 salons, 2 restaurants, kitchen
car, Bar cum lounge and 4 service
cars. 'Khidmatgars' or personal
attendants, in each cabin, cater to all
your needs.
The Legend and the Modern
The Palace On Wheels has gained
remarkable success and attained
worldwide acclaim and popularity
including the PATA gold award in
1987. The Palace On Wheels has
been rated as one of the ten best
luxurious rail journeys in the world. The
popularity of the train has been
enhanced by the media. Famous TV
Teams such as BBC, MTV, Zee TV,
National Geographic, MDR of
Germany and many others have
covered the train and shown it on their
network.
It has carried 36096 tourists in 578
trios up to April 2002
The eight days and seven nights
journey in royal splendour takes you to
the territory Maharajas, the 'Pink City'
of Jaipur; Jaisalmer 'the jewel of the
desert'; the majestic stronghold of
Jodhpur; Sawai Madhopur for the
Ranthambor National Park; the city of
Chittaurgarh with its countless tales of
Rajput chivalry; Udaipur with its lakes
and Lake Palaces; Bharatpur - with its
remarkable Keoladeo Ghana bird
