Powder Metals via Mechanical Alloying

Mechanical alloying is a solid state powder processing technique that involves repeatedly welding, fracturing, and rewelding powder particles in a high-energy ball mill to create a variety of equilibrium and non-equilibrium alloy phases from blended elemental or pre-alloyed powders. The process consists of repeated flattening, fracture, and rewelding of powder particles as steel balls collide and trap particles, deforming them through cold welding and fracturing over multiple stages until an extremely deformed metastable structure is created with dispersoids at the sub-micrometer scale. Applications of mechanically alloyed powders include nickel-based superalloys for jet engines, solid imm

MAKING OF POWDER METALS BY MECHANICAL ALLOYING

Mechanical alloying is a solid state powder processing technique

involving repeated welding ,fracturing and rewelding of powder
particles in a high energy ball mill. Mechanical alloying has shown to be
capable of synthesizing a variety of equilibrium and non equilibrium
alloy phases starting from blended elemental or pre alloyed powders.

PROCESS:-
 The process consists of repeated flattening , fracture, re welding of
powder particles in a high energy ball charge .Every time two steel
balls collide they trap powder particles between them. This
deforms the particles and creates minimal foreign species on the
surface so that welding together of adjacent surfaces can occur
easily. In the first stage, intense cold welding predominates and
layered composite particulates of starting constituents form. This
is followed by hardening and fracturing of the particles. Next is a
moderate cold welding period , the microstructure of the particle
gets finer with a typical spacing between them. The final stage is a
steady state period . By the time processing has been completed
the particles have an extremely deformed metastable structure
which can contain dispersoids. At this point the microstructural
scale is significantly below the micrometer level.

APPLICATIONS:-
 Nickel based super alloys with dispersed thorium oxide are super
alloys having excellent strength and corrosion resistance at
elevated temperatures making them useful n jet engine turbine
blades , vanes ,and combustors.
 Alloys like MA754 and MA6000 are commercially available as bar
and plate for use in gas turbine vanes and turbine blades and for
other applications in oxidizing or corrosive atmospheres.
 Liquid or solid immiscible systems are difficult to process by
conventional pyrometallurgy like copper lead systems. In these
cases mechanical alloying provides a route to obtain a
homogeneous distribution in the solid phase .
 Amorphous alloys can also be produced by using the mechanical
alloying technique. These include Nb3Sn starting from elemental
powders , various rare earth cobalt combinations and titanium
copper and titanium- copper-palladium systems.
