How to realise ‘Green’ in hospital design?
Architectural Design MEP Design
Use an environmentally friendly plot Utilise energy efficient heating and cooling
Consider direction of sun and wind when orientating the Receive energy and hot water from solar panels
building to gain maximal natural light and air circulation mounted e.g. on the roof
Apply sustainable and energy-efficient design Collect rainwater from as much roof area as possible
Allow economical friendly vertical and horizontal to be reused for toilets and gardens
transportation Consider energy efficient lighting
Design around the idea of recycling, reusing, and reducing
Interior Design Landscape Design
Create an environment that enhances patient Create an outdoor environment supports the healing
well-being and aids in curative process process
Utilise efficient fittings to reduce water throughput Implement a water efficient watering system
Use materials with a high recycled content
Make use of floor, wall, and ceiling materials that is free
of volatile materials to improve indoor air quality
17
What are the ‘Benefits’ of Green healthcare?
Minimised Energy Reduced Operating Costs Cheaper Total Cost of
Consumption Ownership
Optimal Water Usage Shorter Patient Stays Effective and Economic
Facilities Management
18
What are the ‘Benefits’ of Green healthcare? Why Should Hospitals Focus on Being Green?
Creating Healthy Environments for Patients, Family and Staff
Utilizing Green materials in hospital construction
Procuring Green products from the hospital
consumerable Supply Chain.
Following a strict Green Waste disposal regime.
Minimised Energy Consumption
Hospitals rank second in the United States in electricity
use
Generate hazardous and non-hazardous waste, air
emissions, and wastewater that can, if not properly
managed, significantly contribute to air, soil and water
pollution
19
What are the ‘Metrics’ for measuring Green healthcare?
Reduced energy and water
consumption
Contributions to national energy,
water, and carbon savings and
long-term environmental impacts
CONSUMPTION
Reduced Facilities
Management costs for the
Lifecycle
COST
Reduced Operational costs

Who benefits from the provision of Green healthcare?
Community
Patients and Patients
Family
Owner
End User/ Operator Government Agencies

The green space strategy begins with the two tree-
lined entry boulevards which transition into a grand
garden oasis at the center of medical city. This
shaded garden, on the roof of the building’s plinth,
is accessed from below by gracious interior and
exterior stairs and activated by adjacent cafes,
conference areas, and family waiting areas.
Within the plinth, itself, a series of courtyards
serves to bring light and nature into these large
floor plates, thereby mitigating the sense of
distance, assisting in way-finding and creating a
more tranquil atmosphere in this medically intense
setting. Above the plinth, the bed towers will be
woven with a series of sunlit terraces, hanging
gardens and adjacent family lounges.
