SABBATH

Read memory text: “Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death…
He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.” Prov 11:4,18 NKJV

What is the day of wrath? What is God’s wrath?

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of
men who suppress the truth by their wickedness…” Romans [Link]

And what did God do? In verses 24, 26, 28: “therefore God gave them up…”

This is God’s wrath. It is not God acting to inflict harm, but God ceasing His gracious interventions to
protect those who refuse His healing and protection.

Are there evidences that this is so?


 Israel when the serpents and scorpions came in to sting
 Israel when they were taken into captivity
 Israel when they rejected Christ
 Jesus on the Cross (Romans 4:25) experienced God’s wrath and what did God do? Let Him go!

Why won’t riches profit in the day when God let’s go His protective hand? Can riches protect against a
corrupt character? Can riches protect against agony of heart, misery of soul, conviction of guilt, the
pain of shame and regret? Can riches protect against being out of harmony with how life is constructed
to operate?

How does righteousness deliver from death?

What is the cause of death? Sin, which is what? Deviation from God’s design and at its root is
selfishness. How does righteousness deliver from death then?

What is righteousness? Is righteousness something we get legally or something we experience


internally?

 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.
Gen 6:9 [note he wasn’t declared to be a righteous man—he was a righteous man]
 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public

disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. Mt 1:19 [Again Joseph was a righteous man]
 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Mt 5:6 [They
will be filled, not their record will be adjusted]

Are we naturally righteous?


 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
Isa 64:6

From where does our righteousness come?


God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God. 2Cor 5:21

How do we get this righteousness?


“See, he is puffed up; his desires are not upright— but the righteous will live by his faith…
Hab 2:4

What does it mean to live by faith?


“They will be mine,” says the Lord Almighty, “in the day when I make up my treasured
possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. 18
And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between
those who serve God and those who do not. Mal 3:17,18

Thus we read about Abraham:


“Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Rom 4:3

Sadly, this is a fairly poor translation, which is one of the places that those who already have a legal
belief system translate the Bible to promote the false legal view. A better translation than credited,
would be recognized to be, or acknowledged as righteous—why? Because Abraham’s natural heart,
which distrusts God, had been set right, back to trust in God, as evidenced by Abraham’s actions.

Thus, in the lexicon the worded translated as credited we read:


to reckon inward, count up or weigh the reasons, to deliberate. 3 by reckoning up all the
reasons, to gather or infer. 3a to consider, take into account, weigh, meditate on. 3b to suppose,
deem, judge. 3c to determine, purpose, decide. Additional Information: This word deals with
reality. If I “logizomai” or reckon that my bank book has $25 in it, it has $25 in it.
Otherwise I am deceiving myself. This word refers to facts not suppositions.1

Those who hold the penal/legal view deceive themselves because they make the Bible teach something
that it doesn’t not teach, that God declares us to be righteous, even though we are not. This is a lie. We
are changed, set right, put right, in our heart attitude with God and God recognizes this real resetting in
us as being right, i.e. righteous.

Summary—righteousness is simply being right, i.e. being in harmony with God and God’s design for
life, which is a character of love that practices truth and liberty. We are born infected with fear and
selfishness and thus are not in our selves spiritually healthy, i.e. righteous or the way God designed for
us to be. Jesus came and overcame the infection of fear and selfishness while revealing truth to win us
to trust. When we trust God, we open our hearts to him, we experience a change in internal motivation
and desire, and more than this, we freely choose to do that which He has led us to understand He wants
us to do. Why do we do it? Because we love Him and trust Him and know without question that He
wants what is best for us.

So why does righteousness deliver from death? Because righteousness is the restoration to God’s
design for life and literally moves a person from living outside God’s laws for life into harmony with
God and His laws for life.

Thus the Bible says:

“He who pursues righteousness and love finds life...” Prov 21:21

Read first paragraph, “Although Satan failed with Jesus…” What do they mean “he has succeeded with
everyone else?”

Have the rest of humanity started life out, i.e. born into the world, in the same condition Jesus was born
into the world?

Was Jesus born a sinner or sinless?

Are we born sinless or sinners?

Is being a sinner about the deeds we do or about the condition of heart that leads to the deeds?

Are we born selfish or selfless? What about Jesus?

So Satan succeeded with Adam and Eve, but the rest of us are born “in sin conceived in iniquity” (Ps
51:5) as a result of Adam and Eve’s choice, not as a result of our own choice. We never had the option
of not being a sinner.

Jesus, however, was born unique, with a fallen mother, but with the HS as His Father, thus He was able
to experience temptation like all of us, but without the internal propensity and natural desire for
selfishness like all of us have. Thus, He was in a different position than either Adam in Eden or you and
I.

In other words, Satan did have to succeed with Adam and Eve, and he failed with Jesus because in
order to win with Jesus he would have to get Jesus to choose to sin.

But Satan doesn’t have to get us to choose to sin, Satan has to trick us into not choosing to trust Jesus
and allowing God to heal us.

Thus, because many in Christianity have this wrong, they focus the attention on salvation on the do’s
and don’ts the sins, behavior, and not instead on focusing the attention on Jesus, the truth, choosing
God, choosing God’s methods, choosing to trust, to love, to engage that which is good.

This is a subtle distinction—because when we choose to think about “whatever is true, whatever is
noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is
excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8) we are simultaneously choosing
to not think about evil.

But this focus, out of love, out of a desire for good to think about the good, generates a completely
different experience than out of fear of punishment vigilantly scanning your world to identify and avoid
anything that might be sinful or evil.

By beholding we are changed—thus if we spend time searching for evil, albeit to avoid it, thinking
about it, watching for it, we are changed to become more fearful, insecure, negative. But, when we
spend time focusing upon, growing in, searching for the good we not only are avoiding the evil we are
becoming more like God!

Thus, the legal theologies have in them another subtle trick, focusing on the sins, the bad deeds, and
trying to focus on what we do or don’t do so we won’t break a rule, ultimately cheats people out of the
peace, love and transforming experience they could otherwise have in and with Jesus!

Example—“Don’t think about a pink elephant, try to avoiding thinking about a pink elephant” Versus,
Actually study and think about anything else and what are you not thinking about?

What is the armor and power of God?

Ephesians 6:10-18 from The Remedy:

Finally, stay strong in your connection and devotion to the Lord and his mighty power.11 Arm
your minds with God's complete set of armor so that you can join the ranks of Christ's soldiers
and stand successfully in the face of the devil's schemes.12 For our struggle is not against flesh

and blood, with man-made weapons, but against all individuals, entities and powers that
misrepresent God and darken minds, and against Satan–the originator of lies about God–and his
cohorts who also misrepresent God in the heavenly realms. [does this bring to mind 2Cor 10:3-
5? our weapons have divine power to demolish strongholds…]13 Therefore arm your minds
with God's full set of armor so that when Satan's grand deception comes and it seems the
heavens are about to fall, you are able to stand;[Do you typically think of the armor of God as
mental armor, arming your mind to not be infected, degraded, discouraged, corrupted?] and
when you have done everything to present the truth and expose Satan's lies–don't falter;
stand!14 Stand firm, with the truth of God wrapped around you like a belt; [what truth is the
truth that we need? Is it primarily the truth about which day is the Sabbath? If we have that truth
but we believe God imposed the day arbitrarily and will punish people for not observing it, then
are we worshipping the true God or the false version Satan alleges? So the primary truth is
always about God and His character and methods] with a righteous, Christlike character
developed within–like a breastplate; [How do we experience a righteous character? Is it
passive, only through trust and God does it all? Or is it cooperative, we trust God who provides
new desires, motives, insights, wisdom, truths, but we must choose to accept, apply, internalize
and identify with God and His truths and do what is right, healthy, and reasonable in
governance of ourselves?]15 and the peace that comes from accepting the good news about
God–like track shoes providing good traction and a solid foundation. [Have you found
increased peace as you have come to experience God as Designer and Creator and rejected the
dictator views?] 16 Also, hold fast the shield of trust, which extinguishes all the burning fear
and insecurity brought by the devil's temptations. [How does trust in God overcome
temptation? Are not most temptations related to some fear or insecurity? Does trust reduce fear
and insecurity? But can you trust a being whom you believe will hurt you if you don’t trust
them?] 17 Take with you the helmet of a healed mind–a mind protected from the assaults of
Satan; [What heals the mind and also protects against the assaults of Satan? A mind that has
developed by practice the ability to tell the right from the wrong (Heb 5:14), a mind that loves
and discerns truth] and attack the lies about God with the sword of the Spirit, which is the
word of God–the truth. 18 And talk with God with an enlightened mind, intelligently, on all
occasions, about all of your concerns, requests, plans, and issues. With all of this in mind, be
alert and always keep praying for God's people.

In the second paragraph the lesson states, “True happiness and right living come from turning our eyes
from the possessions we own and looking to the living Christ, who owns us.”

What does this mean—owns us? Are we property to Jesus? Are we slaves?

What did Jesus say to His disciples?

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I
have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to
you.

The Greek here is the word for slaves, which were owned, but Jesus says He doesn’t want such a
relationship with us. Why?

What happens when we experience ourselves being owned, as property, like a slave? Does such a
mindset in us result in our growth into what God wants for us?

Last Thursday’s lesson said, “We belong to God, both by creation and by redemption.”

Could this be a more helpful way to say it? Could the true idea of the Bible, rather than connoting that
we are property owned by a Sovereign, that instead we belong to God in the same way:
 The meow belongs to the cat
 The branch belongs to the vine
 A child belongs to a parent

We belong to God because only in union with God do we exist, as it says in Acts: ‘For in him we live
and move and have our being.’ 17:28

Would all things belong to God because all things have their origin, substance, existence and life only
as they are connected to Him?

Does this give a different understanding that is consistent with reality, God’s character, and the
principles of love and liberty?

SUNDAY

Read third paragraph, “The only cure fore worldliness…” Devotion to Christ is absolutely essential—
no doubt about that. But…does it matter to which Christ one is devoted?

Moses was devoted to God so he would not allow himself to be corrupted by the wealth of Egypt. What
about those people today who are so devoted to their God that they not only don’t care about the wealth
of America, but will die in order to kill those they believe are enemies of God?

Does their devotion to their God matter if they have the wrong concept of God?

What about someone who is devoted to God, and they also have:
 The seventh-day Sabbath
 The writings of God’s inspired prophets
 The health message
 Pay a faithful tithe and also offerings
 Study their Bibles regularly
 Are on either a church board or conference committee
 And are devoted in their zeal to keep all 10 commandments

What about such devotion? Consider Saul of Tarsus, did he meet all these criteria, yet he still procured
authority from church leaders to kill those who believed differently than he.

Was Saul’s devotion enough?


Was Saul’s devotion with all those correct doctrines cited above enough?

What was the one thing Saul didn’t know? The truth about God’s character and methods of love; Saul
still worshipped a dictator god, who made up rules and then enforced those rules with punishment.
After Damascus road Saul changed and as Paul he wrote that he would gladly give his life so his fellow
Jews could be saved.

Paul became righteous, became renewed, experienced a change of internal motive such that selfishness
was replaced with other-centered love and he was restored to rightness with God!

So the lesson is quite right, we must be devoted to Christ because of “who He is” that is the key,
knowing Christ and the Father for who they are.

Sadly, far too many people still don’t know them, still think God functions like a dictator…

MONDAY

Read first paragraph, “More than six billion…” What does it mean that the Bible is “the Word of the
living God?”

Does it mean when we read the Bible:


 We are reading a dictation from God?
 We are reading material personally written by God?
 We are reading pure heavenly language?
 We are to take it as directives just as it reads?
 That every sentence is truth from God?

How do we understand the Bible? Do we believe that it is inspired by God? Yes! But how does
inspiration work?

God inspires sinful human beings with ideas, truths, concepts, visions, dreams, facts, historic events for
them to record. God oversees the development, retention and inclusion of these records. God enlightens
humble minds to comprehend the truths within.

Does this mean the Bible is 100% accurate in every factual detail?
 2Samuel 6:23 "Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death."
 2Samuel 21:8 "But the king took the two sons of Rizpah . . . and the five sons of Michal the

daughter of Saul." (Two Hebrew manuscripts, some Septuagint and Syriac manuscripts say
“Merab” but most Hebrew and Septuagint manuscripts say Michal.”

 1 Kings 4:26 "And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve
thousand horsemen."
 2 Chronicles 9:25 "And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve
thousand horsemen."

 2Kings 24:8 “Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in
Jerusalem three months.”
 2Chron 36:9 “Jehoiachin was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem
three months and ten days.”

Are there differences from different authors in various accounts of the same events?

Yes, does this suggest unreliability or reliability?

Reliability—why? Because the portions with differences are the exact types of differences different
people give when providing honest recall of events. And these differences are irrelevant to the message
and purpose of the Bible.

What is the purpose of the Bible? To provide the truth necessary for people to know God, reject Satan
and experience salvation.

The Bible is not a book on algebra, computer programming, astrophysics, neurobiology, and while it
has proven to be historically reliable, it is not primarily a history book. It is the revelation of God to
man of Himself, the origin of humanity, the origin of sin, what sin actually is, the controversy between
good and evil, providing evidence to the two methods, the plan of salvation and ultimately the
eradication of all pain, suffering, death and restoration to perfection in a universe governed by a God of
love.

So, we can have reliability in the Bible? Absolutely!

But does that mean then, if someone reads the Bible regularly they will be saved?

Could someone read the Bible regularly and actually be God’s enemy?

I was reading in the book The Desire of Ages this week about Jesus’ birth, and how the Magi came to
find Jesus and the religious leaders were not aware. And how, after the Magi left Herod sent in the
soldiers to kill the male children age 2 and below. Then I read this:

This calamity the Jews had brought upon themselves. If they had been walking in faithfulness

and humility before God, He would in a signal manner have made the wrath of the king
harmless to them. But they had separated themselves from God by their sins, and had
rejected the Holy Spirit, which was their only shield. They had not studied the Scriptures
with a desire to conform to the will of God. They had searched for prophecies which could
be interpreted to exalt themselves, and to show how God despised all other nations. It was
their proud boast that the Messiah was to come as a king, conquering His enemies, and treading
down the heathen in His wrath. Thus they had excited the hatred of their rulers. Through
their misrepresentation of Christ's mission, Satan had purposed to compass the destruction of
the Saviour; but instead of this, it returned upon their own heads. {DA 65.5}

What do you hear being their problem?


 They didn’t humble themselves before God
 They retained personal and national pride
 Their selfish pride separated them from God by refusing to follow and align with Him and
instead doing their own thing
 They studied Scripture, but not do know God’s truth or will; they studied prophecy to prove
themselves special and others despised by God
 This attitude excited the hatred of the rulers, misrepresented God, obstructing God’s purpose
and resulted in their own destruction

Question: Do we as Christians risk doing the very same thing today?


 Proudly interpret Bible prophecy to exalt us and show how God despises others?
 Misrepresent God as arbitrary and coming to rule the nations with a rod of iron?
 Will it result in stirring up hatred to Christianity?

So when we read the Bible what mindset should we have?

Humble willingness to learn, but also a mind that questions things that don’t make sense, filtering
everything through the truth about God that Jesus revealed.

Read last paragraph, “Love of worldly…” This is well said.

What does it mean “love your neighbor as yourself”?

Is love only an emotion or does love cause action? And what type of action? Beneficent, other-
centered, can you love (in action) if you are incapacitated? So, in order to love others you have to
maintain self-care, wellness, health. Thus before one can love others one must first:

 Have something worth sharing or giving to others


o Cannot teach people to read if you yourself cannot read
o Cannot teach people the truth about God if you don’t know God
o Cannot genuinely love others if you don’t have love in your heart

o So, must first be converted in your heart to a genuine love/trust relationship with Jesus
Christ—really knowing Him before one can be most effective in God’s cause (notice I
said most effective. God in His wisdom can use many things—including speaking
through a donkey.)
 Be in a state of health where one is capable of providing to others

TUESDAY

First paragraph states, “We saw yesterday that God communicates to us through His divine Word.” We,
in turn, commune with Him through prayer.”

Is the Bible the only avenue through which God communicates to us?

What other avenues?


 Nature, science Rom 1:20
 Life experiences
 Other people
 Dreams
 Visions
 Sometimes the still small voice
 Angels

But, if God communicates to us in a method other that the Bible what is the danger and what is our
protection?

The danger is that Satan can come as an angel of light, and thus messages purported to be from God
may not be. Therefore, we must harmonize all messages from God with the Scripture.

What is the danger in taking messages from Scripture alone? If we fail to harmonize Scripture with
design law (nature) and experience, then we can get all kinds of erroneous beliefs that contradict reality
and misrepresent God.

What is prayer?

Our life is to be bound up with the life of Christ; we are to draw constantly from Him, partaking
of Him, the living Bread that came down from heaven, drawing from a fountain ever fresh, ever
giving forth its abundant treasures. If we keep the Lord ever before us, allowing our hearts to go
out in thanksgiving and praise to Him, we shall have a continual freshness in our religious life.
Our prayers will take the form of a conversation with God as we would talk with a friend.
He will speak His mysteries to us personally. Often there will come to us a sweet joyful sense
of the presence of Jesus. Often our hearts will burn within us as He draws nigh to commune
with us as He did with Enoch. When this is in truth the experience of the Christian, there is seen

in his life a simplicity, a humility, meekness, and lowliness of heart, that show to all with whom
he associates that he has been with Jesus and learned of Him. {COL 129.3}

This description of prayer is activates brain regions of higher cortex, real interaction with another
being. And that is what neuroscience states happens with spontaneous prayer:

• Spontaneous prayer resulted in activation of same brain regions as when talking to another
person (theory of mind)
o Regions associated with anticipation, consideration of another’s response,
attitudes, feelings, reaction (right & left cortex)
• When reciting memorized prayers or repetitive mantras the same brain regions lit up as when
reciting nursery rhymes –
o regions of recall, rote learning and repetition – but not higher cortical function –
no prefrontal cortex
• When making a list for Santa the Prefrontal cortex didn’t activate as in spontaneous prayer
• Brain doesn’t activate in the same way when interacting with computer or inanimate objects
• Brain doesn’t expect reciprocity or think about the wants/desires/need of the computer,
no empathy, connection, relational interaction

Read second paragraph, “If, as we have seen…” No doubt prayer is important—but what are the secrets
to effective prayer?

 First and foremost, to whom is one praying—not just the name a person uses when calling to
their God, but who they believe their God to be, what attributes and characteristics they
understand him to possess
o Can a person pray to beings other than the true God?
o Can people pray to beings other than the truth God but believe they are praying to the
true God?
 Second, our heart attitudes when we pray “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and
effective.” James 5:16

What makes a person righteous? Having a heart transformed to be like Christ!

Jesus said, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.
You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” Jn 14:13,14

What does it mean to ask in the name of Jesus?

Does it mean to end your prayer with “In Jesus name?”

In the Bible what does the name signify? Character, Jacob the deceiver became Israel, one who

overcomes with God.

So, to pray in the name of Jesus means to pray with the character of Jesus, and what would that be?

To pray to reveal the truth, to glorify the Father, to uplift God’s principles, to fulfill God’s purposes in
harmony with God’s methods. This is the same as the prayer of a righteous person!

From the book The Desire of Ages:

But to pray in Christ's name means much. It means that we are to accept His character,
manifest His spirit, and work His works. The Saviour's promise is given on condition. "If ye
love Me," He says, "keep My commandments." He saves men, not in sin, but from sin; and
those who love Him will show their love by obedience. {DA 668.2}

Do you agree that to pray in the name of Jesus means that we pray in an attitude of accepting His
character, seeking to manifest His spirit and work His works?

Do you agree God wants to save us from sin, not in sin?

What is the difference?

Is this different than saving us from the punishment of sin?

Read last paragraph, “If there is no faith…”

What is faith attached to prayer? Isn’t it simply we pray to a God that we genuinely trust to know better
than us, to provide more than we can conceive and we genuinely want His intervention and will to
overrule our own desires to effect the outcome that He knows is best? We trust Him with the outcome!

Presumption is the attitude of praying for such and such while calling on the name “Jesus” believing
because we used the right formula God will do it.

Do you see the difference?

WEDNESDAY

Read second and third paragraphs, “Solomon had great…” What is obedience in the Biblical sense? Is
it blindly, thoughtlessly doing what one is told?

Does God like it when our questions are from a desire to truly comprehend, understand, to be able to
intelligently cooperate?

Further, if we have obstacles in our character, beliefs, experiences, say fears or insecurities, could they
be worked out of our hearts by questioning, evening arguing with God?

Remember Moses when God first called him to go back to Egypt? Didn’t he argue against God’s plan?
Why? Because Moses had fears, insecurities, doubts that were worked through in the discourse with
God. If we instruct people not to have such dialogue with God, we may obstruct them from working
through elements in their hearts that need resolving.

THURSDAY

Read first paragraph, “The great controversy…” Can you easily differentiate activities, programs,
practices, statements, doctrines, teachings that are on either side of the controversy?

What method do you use to differentiate what is on which side of the controversy?

Could we make a list that might help people determine whether something is in harmony with God and
His kingdom or in harmony with Satan’s kingdom?

Anything that violates God’s design laws and puts God in the light of an arbitrary dictator, a being from
whom we need protection is a lie.

If we use this standard, do we see how much of accepted doctrine is distorted and needs revising?

The middle section says, “When we let the Holy Spirit take possession of us, what things will God do
to ensure we have spiritual victory?”

How does the Spirit of God work? What tools or methods does the Holy Spirit use?

Truth presented in love leaving others free, read fourth paragraph, “It is through…” When we surrender
to the Holy Spirit, what is the ultimate outcome? Self-control—how does this happen? We are healed to
be beings who have the capacity to exercise authority in governance of self to live in harmony with
God and His design laws.
