Course Unit 1: Performing Music (1MU01) – 30% of the total GCSE
Summary One solo performance
One ensemble performance
Students need to enter recordings of their performances as well as a score,
professional recording or written commentary.
Unit 2: Composing Music (1MU02) – 30% of the total GCSE
One ‘free’ composition
One composition to an exam-supplied brief
Students need to enter recordings of both compositions/arrangements as well as
notated scores or written commentaries.
Unit 3: Listening and Appraising (1MU03) – 40% of the total GCSE
Written Exam – 1 hr 45 mins
Students will be tested on their knowledge and study of 8 set works from 4 different
Areas of Study. The paper divides into two sections. Section A involves six questions
related to six of the eight set works, one short melodic/rhythmic dictation exercise and
a question about an unfamiliar piece of music. Section B requires students to compare
and/or evaluate the musical elements, musical contexts and musical language of one
set work with one unfamiliar piece of music.
