Precautions for Ohm's Law Experiment

The document provides instructions for 6 physics experiments involving circuits and measurement of electrical properties. Key instructions that are repeated for many of the experiments include ensuring tight connections, cleaning wire ends with sandpaper before connecting, gently moving the jockey on the potentiometer wire without rubbing, and only inserting plugs in keys when taking readings. Specific instructions vary between experiments such as using an appropriate rheostat for Ohm's Law, connecting cell terminals correctly for measuring internal resistance, and using a battery with higher emf than the cells being compared.

Practical 1 (ohm’s law)

(1) The connections should be tight.

(2) Too high currents should not be drawn from the battery and short circuiting must be avoided.
(3) A low resistance rheostat should be used.
(4) Voltmeter and ammeter should be of proper range and connected in proper order.
(5) The key should be closed only while taking observation.

Practical 2 (series combination)

(1) Connections must be properly tight.

(2) The ends of the connecting wires should be rubbed and cleaned with a sand paper.
(3) Move the jockey gently over the bridge wire and do not rub it.
(4) The balance point should always be obtained near the middle of the wire.
(5) The plug should be inserted in the key only when the readings are to be taken.

Practical 3 (parallel combination)

(1) Connections must be properly tight.

(2) The ends of the connecting wires should be rubbed and cleaned with a sand paper.
(3) Move the jockey gently over the bridge wire and do not rub it.
(4) The balance point should always be obtained near the middle of the wire.
(5) The plug should be inserted in the key only when the readings are to be taken.

Practical 4 (unknown resistance, resistivity,meter bridge )

(1) Connections must be properly tight.

(2) The ends of the connecting wires should be rubbed and cleaned with a sand paper.
(3) Move the jockey gently over the bridge wire and do not rub it.
(4) The balance point should always be obtained near the middle of the wire.
(5) The plug should be inserted in the key only when the readings are to be taken.

Practical 5 (internal resistance of potentiometer )

(1) When not taking reading zinc rod should be removed from primary cell.
(2) The value of resistance R should be in the range of internal resistance of the primary cell.
(3) With the positive end of the potentiometer wire the positive end of the primary cell should be
connected.
(4) The value of resistance of rheostat should remain the same during experiment.
(5) The cell should not move during the experiment.
(6) Jockey should not be pressed and moved on the wire.

Practical 6 (comparison of emfs potentiometer )

(1) The connections should be clear, correct and tight.

(2) The plugs should be inserted in the keys only when the observations are to be taken.
(3) The e.m.f. of the battery should be greater than the e.m.f.’s of either of the two cells.
(4) The positive terminals of all the cells are connected to the same end of potentiometer.
(5) Jockey should be slided gently on the wire.
(6) The rheostat should not be adjusted, while taking a particular set of observation.
