Alternative Low Temp Steels

This document provides information on the use of different grades of steel for low temperature applications, including their minimum design and testing temperatures. It lists various steel grades from standards in Australia, America, the UK, Japan and notes on their suitability, availability and required impact testing based on ASTM standards. The minimum design temperatures for plates and sections range from -15°C to -45°C depending on the grade, with minimum test temperatures 5-10°C lower. Impact testing must meet criteria of 27 Joules average for full size samples or 14 Joules average for half size samples.

Notes
1.) Depending upon Availability for MDMT down to -20 deg.C 'Normalised' Boiler & Pressure Vessel
plate can be substituted, They will need to be checked by Impact testing.
2.) For extreme low temperature applications Nickel Alloy Steels should be considered
3.) Duplex & Austinetic Stainless Steels are suitalbe for low temperature applications without impact
testing.

4.) Impact testing will be in accordance with ASTM A370 with sample sizes and locations in
accordance with ASTM A673
5.) For sample sizes 10mm x 10mm x 55mm acceptance criteria is an average greater than 27 Joules
with o single sample less than 20 Joules
6.) For half size samples 10mm x 5mm x 55mm acceptance criteria is an average greater than 14
Joules with o single sample less than 11 Joules
