Quirino State University: Civil Engineering Department

This document contains instructions for a midterm examination in Construction Materials and Testing (CMT) at Quirino State University. The exam consists of 5 situations testing different concepts: [1] concrete failure mechanisms; [2] why concrete strength is tested; [3] compression failure modes; [4] determining cement paste consistency; and [5] nominal maximum aggregate size based on job requirements. Students are instructed to show work, use the prescribed format, and submit their responses by the deadline to avoid point deductions. The exam is prepared by instructor Engr. Ernesto F. Capinding, Jr. of the Civil Engineering Department.

MIDTERM EXAMINATION IN CONTRUCTION MATERIALS AND TESTING (CMT)

Direction: Do as required: 10 points per situation

Situation I. Sketch the three (3) failure mechanisms of concrete, and

describe each failure mechanisms, in one (1) sentence.

Situation II. Explain, in one (1) sentence, why concrete strength is

tested.

Situation III. Sketch the three (3) modes of compression failures, and
describe each compression failures, in one (1) sentence.

Situation IV. Determine the normal consistency of cement paste based

on the following results of the experiment conducted. Show the
necessary solution.

SAMPLE AMOUNT OF AMOUNT OF PENETRATIION

CEMENT(grams) WATER(grams) (mm)
1 78 25 18
2 62 23 23
3 50 20 25
4 50 22 27

Situation V. Determine the nominal maximum size of coarse aggregates

for a certain job requirement based on the following data:
 The clear spacing between reinforcing bars vertically and
horizontally are 40mm and 30 mm, respectively.
 The depth of the slab is 125mm including ¾ inches floor finished.
 The dimension of reinforced concrete floor beam is 250mm x 400mm.
 The dimension of the reinforced concrete column is 300mm x 300mm.
Show the necessary solution.

Notes:
 Use the prescribed format for quizzes/seatwork/assignment.
 Instead of writing quizzes/seatwork/assignment,
write Midterm Examination.
 Scan your output and saved as pdf file.
 Follow the format for the filename, cmtmidterm(yoursurname)
example: cmtmidtermdelossantos

 Send your output in this email account, [email protected]

 Submission of output is until November 20, 2017 at 9:00am.
 Outputs submitted within 9:01am of November 20, 2017 has a corresponding
1-point deduction to the total raw score, and for every one (1) hour, a
corresponding 2 points deductions to the total raw score.
