My experience as an English teacher
at Purnapramati
ramati
Sulochana G. High school Section
It is with trepidation that I stepped into class IX to teach English for the first time. I did not have the
opportunity to teach English since I was a Mathematics teacher. Having accepted that I would have to teach English, I
had to do a lot of ground work. I did a lot of preparation before each class and it was a joy to see the progress of my
students.
I conducted a number of pair and group activities as well as some grammar exercises which were relevant to the grade.
I also focused on their listening skills by making them listen to a structured English program for IX grade students. I
also encouraged the children to read books. This was a big challenge as most of the children were not used to reading
English books. Slowly and steadily, we developed the reading skills. I requested for a Library period and got adventure
books of Enid Blyton, R.K. Narayan yan and other authors. For one or two of them who had real difficulty, I gave them
short stories. To develop speaking skills, I insisted that children should speak in English during my class. Initially it
was very difficult but slowly most of my childre
children now speak in English.
In the middle of the year, we decided to conduct literary activities for high school. We had Essay writing, Poem
recitation, Just-a- minute and Speech sessions. It was fun selecting the topics and preparing the children for these
activities. What I liked most was the fresh ideas our children had. Each of them wanted to voice their thoughts and
feelings in a different way. I enjoyed guiding them in this journey and I think I can say that they performed really well,
making me deeply fulfilled as a teacher.
