Grading Rubric for Online Discussions

The document provides a draft grading rubric for online forum discussions with 4 criteria: 1) tone, 2) creativity, 3) reflection, and 4) expression. It includes descriptions for varying levels of achievement within each criteria from A/Outstanding to F/Failing. It suggests assigning points that correspond to grades, such as an excellent post receiving 10 points (100), a good paragraph response receiving 9 points (90), etc. The rubric is intended to encourage students to make one substantive post that demonstrates reflection and original thought, while allowing additional comments without penalty.

Possible Grading Rubric for Online Forum Discussions (Draft)

Below is a possible grading rubric for grading Moodle discussion forums. Please use
it in so far as it is helpful.

1) Positive Contribution (Tone/Politeness)

A) Positive/Respectful Tone
C) Ambiguous Tone
F) Negative Tone
2) Creativity - Is this the student's original thought or insight
A) Clearly original and creative thinking
B) Mostly original ideas, some ideas incorporated or rehashed from other students
C) Mostly rehashing of ideas from classmates
3) Reflection - How deep of a comment is it? Does it demonstrate that they have read and
reflected on the material?
A) Serious/Deep Reflection
B) Good Reflection
C) Fair Reflection
F) Poor Reflection
4) Expression - How clearly is the students idea expressed. Are their appropriate
examples/references to the topic being discussed?
A) Superb clarity and expression
B) Good clarity and expression
C) Clear but lacking examples/references
D) No exactly clear
F) Unclear

Ideally I would want this to be fairly simple like we discussed.

100 - Student makes a significant, positive contribution to the discussion by introducing

creative/original insights that demonstrate serious and deep reflection expressed in a clear
manner.
95 - Student makes a positive contribution to the discussion with some creative/original
insights that demonstrate reflection expressed in a clear manner.
85 - Student makes a positive contribution to the discussion with little creative/original
insight but shows that the student reflected on the material being discussed and is
expressed in a reasonably clear manner.
75 - Student makes a positive contribution to the discussion with little evidence of
creative/original thought but shows some reflection on the material being discussed yet
expressed in a less than clear manner.
50 - Student makes a positive contribution to the discussion with little evidence of
creative/original thought with limited signs of reflection on the material being discussed
and expressed in a less than clear manner.
0 - Student contribution is not considered helpful to the forum discussion.
Students may and are encouraged to make multiple contributions; however, their grade
will be based on their best contribution. This allows for students to make some comments
on the work of others without fear of being penalized but clearly encourages them to
write one, good, solid post which hopefully gives the teacher higher quality and while
avoiding the clutter of higher quantity. Students may lose points from their highest
contribution if they make a negative contribution or start what is called a 'forum war'.

In practice I have found that using a rating scale of 1-10 is helpful. An excellent, thought
provoking post with sufficient length is worth 10 points. A good paragraph response with
average content is worth 9 points. A shorter post with good content could receive 8
points. A short post or one with fair content could receive 7 points. A one or two line
response with no much content could receive 5 points. These correspond to 100, 90, 80,
70, and 50. If I have to edit a response it usually results in a deduction for at least 10
points.

Please use this rubric as a starting place – it is a work in progress and should be adapted
to best suite your needs.
