Copyofbinarycounting

The document provides examples of converting between binary and base 10 number systems. It gives 5 examples of binary numbers converted to base 10, and 5 examples of base 10 numbers converted to binary. Students are asked to use binary number cards to complete additional conversion exercises and identify patterns in the binary numbering system. These include counting from 0 to 10 in binary, a method for increasing any number by 1 in binary, determining their date of birth in binary, and calculating the largest number and next largest numbers representable in binary. The document aims to build skills in converting between binary and base 10 number systems through hands-on activities with binary number cards.

Binary Numbers Practice

Description
Using your cards, figure out the base 10 numbers for the following base 2 (binary) numbers.

1. 10110101 = 181
2. 10100111 = 323
3. 11011010 = 218
4. 00010001 = 17
5. 11100101 = 229

Using your cards, figure out the binary numbers for these base 10 numbers.

1. 100 = 01100100
2. 68 = 01000100
3. 45 = 00101101
4. 13 = 00001101
5. 4 = 00000100

What base ten numbers are represented here?

9 10

5 13

0 17

2 20

0 31

Additional Questions:
1. Using your cards, count from 0 - 10. Do you see a pattern forming in how the cards are flipped? Try again if you
don’t see it and this time use your journal to take notes while you are flipping. What is the pattern or what do
you notice?

Every time a new number is introduced in consecutive order from left to right a new card is opened.

2. Using your cards, can you figure out a logical and reliable method of flipping the cards to increase any number
by one?

When increased by one start from the left and turn those cards over until you reach the number needed and
stop flipping cards.

3. What day of the month were you born in binary?

00011

01100

4. What is the largest number you can create with your cards?

31

5. If we continued adding cards to the left, how many dots would the next card have?

32

6. How about the next?

64
