APRIL 15,1993Axis of the Machine.
The most common machine sold is a 3 axis machining center.
The axis are X, Y, and Z. Typically the X axis represents the longest
travel of the machine. As you face the machine the X axis is the
axis that would move from left to right. The Y axis would be the axis
that moves in and out. The axis that is mounted vertically is the Z
axis and is considered the tool axis. This axis moves up and down.
Some machines may be equipped with a 4th axis. This would be a
rotary axis mounted on the table with the faceplate parallel the Y
axis and will rotate about the X axis. The axis designation for this
axis is the A axis. See illustration of the axis of the machine.
