When Jerry Yangs father died he moved to San Jose, California with his mother
and brother, from Taiwan. Jerry Yangs fathers death left the Yang family no other
choice, but than to move to San Jose. Jerry was ten years old when he arrived to the
United States. At this time he was a Chinese immigrant who spoke only one word of
English, which was shoe. At first he got made fun a lot, but this only motivated him to
work harder. Within the first three years of him living in the United States he mastered
the English language. Jerry graduated first in his high school class and was elected
student body president. He ended up going to Stanford University and had to work
part-time to help support himself at Stanford University. Jerry managed to get his
bachelor's and master's degree just within four years. While at Stanford him and his
classmate David Filo searched through web content and noticed it was nothing like
searching for library books. Jerry and David created a directory of websites organized in
a hierarchy. At First called Jerry and Davids Guide to the World Wide Web, then later
given the acronym Yahoo! for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle. Yahoo
became very successful and made him one of Americas richest men, worth $130 billion
at one point. In 2012 he left Yahoo to invest in the next generation of technologies at his
AME Cloud Ventures.
1978 was the year Jerry Yang came to the United States. During the time period
that Jerry Yang came to the United States immigrants were viewed as bad for the
American Society. Immigrants were viewed as bad for the American society because
they were seen as likely to take away many opportunities for American citizens.
Although the most common way to view immigrants at this time was negatively only a
few looked at it as positively. The very few that saw it as a positive looked at it that way
because they saw it as a way of bettering the economy.
Around the time Jerry immigrated to the United States millions of immigrants
were coming to the United States. A big percentage of these immigrants were from
eastern and western Europe. There were many reasons on why immigration increased
during this time period. One reason why immigrants came to the United States was
hope for a better life than the one they had in their hometown. Another reason why
immigrants came to the United States was because immigrants at this time were looking
for an escape from cruel governments. Some people at this time immigrated to the
United States simply for thy curiosity or as some would call it an adventure into
unknown land. Religion was also a big key factor as to why immigrants wanted to move
to the United States. People who did not have religious freedoms in their hometown
decided it was time to settle somewhere where they did. Mostly people who were going
to face persecution due to their religious beliefs knew it was time to find a new home.
The United States happened to be their new home. This was due to all the freedoms we
have here in America, including the right to choose to be whatever religion you want to
be a part of or whatever types of beliefs you have.
The 1970s was a thunderous time. Many different groups of Americans were
fighting hard for their rights at this time. Native Americans, African Americans, gays, and
lesbians had to fight for equality. Many Americans at this time even the protest against
the war going on in Vietnam. In some ways I guess you can say it was a continuation of
the 1960s. During the 1970s the Vietnam war came to an end and the United States
economy was hurting. At this time many problems began to happen to the people of the
United States. Some of these problems were energy shortage, high inflation, and high
unemployment.
