Modal Analysis for Seismic Design

This document discusses modal analysis and response spectrum analysis to determine seismic loads on a structure. It describes calculating mode participation factors and mass participation factors for each mode to determine how each mode contributes to the overall seismic response. The lateral force for each mode at each floor level is then calculated as the product of the design seismic coefficient, mode participation factor, mode shape value, and mass. Total lateral forces and overturning moments are found by summing the contributions from each mode.

Answer
Response spectrum analysis
For the modal parameters considered, the following
factors are determined for each mode
Mode participation factor of each mode Pi
Mass participation factor for each mode Mi
Spectral Acceleration coefficient (Sa/g)

The Design horizontal seismic coefficient Ai is

calculated for each mode from

=

Zone factor Z
Importance factor I
Response reduction coefficient R
Spectral Acceleration coefficient Sa/g
Response spectrum analysis (cont):
Where the Horizontal acceleration Sa/g is determined
from the Response spectrum curve
Lateral Force
The lateral force due to the modal response (considering the
mode participation factor) is obtained for each mode of all
the modes considered. The force at each level for each mode
is calculated as:

fji = Ai fji Pi Mj
Where
Ai is the design horizontal seismic coefficient mode-i
fji is the mode shape value for that floor level-j at mode-i
Pi is mode participation factor for mode-i = L/M
Mj is mass at that floor level-j
