M. Butterfly: Gender & Sexuality Insight

The student realized mistakes in their essay on M. Butterfly after receiving feedback. They noticed confusion between the terms "gender" and "sexuality" and worked to better define the difference while arguing they cannot be discussed separately. Other errors addressed were a lack of tying the overall argument together and including a source that better fit the discussion.

Butterfly Essay Reflection

As I read my essay after receiving my feedback, I started to notice a few of the mistakes

that were not so obvious to me when I submitted the assignment. Taking another look at it

displayed the confusion that I had found myself in when it came to the use of the terms gender

and sexuality. I have since changed the ways I used these terms to better fit my argument and

instead of just trying to use them interchangeably as synonyms, I have tried to establish a

difference and use them together to further try and prove my point that one of the terms cannot

be mentioned without the other. I still believe that both the gender and sexuality issues go hand

in hand and explain both behavioral patterns that are created by gender labeling and the sexual

tensions that cannot be addressed because those individuals that cannot fit in with the ways of

society will simply be looked at as outcasts. Another major mistake I tried to correct was the fact

that I did not include anything that tied everything together and proposed the main point of my

argument. Since then, I have gone back, read my essay again, and tried to establish my argument

and bring it all together in the conclusion. Lastly, I was able to find another source that better fit

what I was discussing so I changed it and tied it into one of my arguments that I had already

established earlier in my essay.
