LGBT Rights PSA Reflection

This document contains a student's reflection on a public service announcement (PSA) they created about discrimination faced by the LGBT community in America. The PSA features the colors of the LGBT pride flag projected onto the White House. It aims to raise the question of whether LGBT Americans should be considered Americans with equal rights. The student discusses how they used symbols, colors and language to convey the solemn mood and evoke sympathy for the challenges LGBT people face daily. They believe the image of the pride colors on the White House is very persuasive in getting across the key message that LGBT people should not have to endure prejudice and lack of rights as other Americans do.

Reflection

The PSA I created is to reach out to all Americans about the discrimination of the LGBT

community, the main point is directed at being an American citizen and if the LGBT community

is not considered to be them. ILGA is the International Lesbian, Gay, transgender, bisexual and

intersex association. The main purpose of my PSA is to ask the pressing question that I read in

Lipps article. Are LGBTS not American as anyone else? They dont have the same rights and are

discriminated against every day. I chose the national colors of the LGBT community projected

on the white house which I think catches the viewers attention. The colors are appealing and

catch the eye of people along with ILGAs logo which also has the rainbow colors.

My PSA contains appropriate language, a symbol, corresponding color schemes and

underlying meaning. The main symbol of my PSA is the white house, and the rainbow colors

representing the LGBT community projecting on it. The White house is a true American symbol

and the community still faces this prejudice today, this image will catch the viewers attention.

A symbol that may be interpreted by some is the darkness outside but the light from the

projection, this may symbolism the coming out of those in the LGBT who are frightened or who

were. The mood of my PSA was meant to be solemn and questioning. The image shows the

colors of LGBT pride which was a must for the subject of my PSA. My text describes how those

in that community face hardships every day and that they should not have to being as they are
Americans like everyone else. My article relates to same sex marriages benefits to society and

in the article, it is questioned that they do not have equal rights as Americans. It evokes

emotions for the sympathy of those in this position. The PSA brings up political issues because

there are still parties who represent our country that are hostile towards this community.

I think the main point of the questioning of being American is the most persuasive

strategy because the audience is the entire nation. The white house is also a very persuasive

point because it is the symbol of America itself. Ethos is used to establish credibility which is

why I have used an international non-profit organization which would make a PSA like this.

Pathos is strong due to my PSA addressing America in its entirety and if they wanted to be

known for treating people like this. I designed the PSA to have the question bigger than

anything else on the ad so that it is clearly understood, it is the first thing viewers will see.

The design of my PSA certainly wasnt easy, I had trouble finding an image that was

appropriate for my topic and finding the right words to get my point across. I changed the

picture a few times after my draft but finally decided on one that corresponded with LGBT

symbols but also reflected on America. I think the color scheme is the greatest strength of my

PSA because it correlates with my topic well. My strongest point that I am happy I created was

that the lights were projected onto the White House which symbolizes America in its entirety

which is the main point of my PSA. My second edit I did not change anything in my actual PSA

because I felt it was strong as is. To create an effective PSA takes logical reasoning and hitting

points that can relate to your viewers in different ways.
