Instead of a taking a test over the short story, you will write two short essays:

1. Write one paragraph about the theme of the story. What do you think the theme is and

why what happens in the story what the theme is? Then, compare the theme to another

story we have read so far this year. What is the same and what is different?

2. In some of the stories we have read this semester, there has been violence or the threat of

violence. Is violence ever okay? Are there situations where violence is the only option?

First, state your opinion of if violence is ever the solution to a problem. Why is this your

opinion? Then, give examples of situations of when it is or is not okay to use violence.
