1. You have been asked to write a short story for your college magazine. The story must
begin with the following sentence: (30 points)

If I hadnt answered the phone, it would have been just another ordinary day. But after
that call, things begin to change in a way I never expected.

A dark and deep voice at the other end of the line just said this short sentence: Your life is
in danger, nothing else, just that and then a long silence followed but meet me at central
station at 8 p.m., Ill contact you, and then hung up.

I was shocked, it was a joke? It was real? Whats going on? I was an ordinary guy working
as a freelance for some publications, and although I had a strong position about some
political issues, usually I wrote about cultural things, education and stuff like that. I never
had been so active in social networks about any sensitive subject, precisely because I knew
the risks involved. So I faced two choices, forget that call and keep business as usual or go
to central station that night to find out more about this strange warning. Obviously Im not
going to have peace with this in my mind so I decide to go.

It was a cold breeze that night. So I grab my jacket, a scarf and leave my place. Central
station was a few blocks away of my house so I decide to walk to have time to think and
get rid of the stress and anxiety.

I arrived just on time and after just two minutes a big guy approached me and tell me:
Thanks for coming, follow me, so we walked together for a few minutes and then he
entered in a big house at the end of Olmos street, he invited me to come in and ask me to
wait on the hall. And then a distinguished old man appears and tell me with a grave voice:
My dear young fellow, thanks for came and trust in our warning. Youve been chosen for a
special mission and at the same have become a target of one of the more powerful and
obscure organizations around the world. I was thrilled, with a little fear, I have to say it,
but excited for what is ahead of this mysterious situation.

And then begun the journey of my life. (to be continued)

1. Choose one of the following topics and write a short essay giving reasons to support your
particular point of view. (50 points)

a. In the past months the debate about legalizing drugs in Colombia has reappeared, opinions
are divided. Do you think drugs should or should not be legalized in Colombia? Why? Why
not?

Im totally in favor of drugs legalization and I really think that right now that were entering
in this big and complicated peace process, Its probably one of the major actions and steps
that the government and society can give to alleviate a lot of social and political problems
related to them, including violence, corruption and many of the crimes related to drug
traffic and commercialization. And definitely one of the main reasons of the war in our
country has been all the money that is generated through drug business. And sadly to say
everyone is involved in our country, guerrilla, drug dealers and their big cartels, army, police
and government. It is one of the most lucrative industries at the same level of arms sales
and oil business

Prohibition have never been a real solution. Marijuana for example is the most popular drug
around the world although is prohibited in most of the countries. Prohibition may shrink the
market, by raising costs and therefore price, but always a black market emerges in which
production and use continue. And black markets generate very bad effects. Addicts must to
pay many times the cost of goods, so they often must turn to crime to finance their habits.
The streets become a battleground among competing dealers, and so on.

Black markets generate corruption, inhibit quality control and creates health risks. And all
of this besides the big amount of money invested every year to try to control and enforce
the laws against drugs, that can be invested in very good programs to supervise the drug
control and legalization or other issues or public health.

But besides of all this reasons there is one that is very important and is related to freedom
of choice, because many of the normal users of drugs are not addict users but recreational
users and as many people decide to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes (that causes a lot
more deaths than the use of marijuana for example) every individual and not the
government has the right to choose what is better for their own lives.
