Introduction
Life cycle of a frog
Length of Lesson: 30 minutes
VA Standards of Learning
Science 2.4a) The student will understand that some animals (frogs) undergo distinct stages
during their lives
Learning Objectives
The Student Will:
Correctly sequence the life cycle of a frog
Identify that frogs undergo metamorphosis
Teaching and Learning Sequence
Introduction/Anticipatory Set – 10 mins
o Explain to the students that we will be learning about frogs today and we will
begin a classroom KWL before reading
o Divide the white board into three columns, (Know, Want to Know, Learned)
o Ask students what they know about frogs
o Write down students answers on the white board first column
o Then ask students what questions they have about frogs
o Write these questions down on white board second column
o Explain that the final column will be completed after the story
Lesson Development – 10 mins
Read From Tadpole to Frog by Wendy Pfeffer

Complete final column of KWL with classroom participation
Make sure they recognize the life cycle of a frog is like the butterfly cycle
learned previously also known as metamorphosis
Review the stages of a frog’s life cycle using oversized photo cards
Have a student come up to hold each life stage
Closure – 10 mins
Have students complete a Step Down booklet (6 steps)
Top layer will state: “Life Cycle of a Frog”
Second Layer begins the life cycle, have students label each stage of the cycle at
the bottom along with an illustration of the frog at this stage under each flap
Stages include Eggs, Tadpole, Froglet, Frog
On the final page the students will write down one new fact they learned from
the book
Homework
Frog booklet may be completed at home to be returned to school the next day
Assessment
Formative – The teacher will review what has been learned after reading the book
through the KWL on the white board.
Summative – The students will complete a step booklet with the life cycle of a frog. The
booklet will be graded for accuracy on the life stages.
