Teaching Shared/Guided Reading Strategies

The teacher introduced a story to students by having them look at the cover and predict what it may be about. She explained that all stories have authors who write them and illustrators who draw the pictures. While reading the story, the teacher asked questions about colors and fruits to engage the students. At the end, each student retold part of the story to show their understanding.

Reflections on Observation Task 3: Teaching Shared/Guided Reading

1. Which concepts about print (CAP), phonological awareness, letter

knowledge and or phonics did the teacher focus on?

a) What did strategies/activities the teacher use to help the

students understand the concept being taught?

-while the teacher is reading the story to the children she was
changing her face expressions to let the students engaged,
and she was also changing her voice tone, she was asking
different questions to the children for example what you can
see in the cover page, which colour is this, what do you think
will happen next, from where do we start reading the book.
These questions are really important for children in this age
to gain there knowledge and to let them get curious about
the end of the story.

2. Were there any initial/medial/final sounds, punctuation, sight words or word

families that were covered during the lesson? If they were, select (a); if they
were not, select (b).

a. W h a t was the purpose of teaching these concepts? Explain its

importance.

-The children was so excited they were copying the caterpillar

movements, the teacher was asking the students what is your favourite
cake or fruit and also she was asking them what do you think will
happen at the end of the story and they were all telling the teacher
different answers, they were curious and excited at the same time
because they want to know what will happen at the end.

b) Provide one (1) activity example of how initial/medial/final

sounds, punctuation, sight words or word families could have
been could have been covered during the lesson.
